Bengaluru, Oct 13: Upset with JD(S) youth leader Prajwal Revanna’s “bucket culture” comment, the JD(S) leadership is learnt to have advised him to exercise restraint while making public speeches.

No sooner than Prajwal’s statements on the “prevalence of sycophancy” in the JD(S) were widely reported on Wednesday, than JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda telephoned his grandson and reprimanded him.

According to sources, Gowda is learnt to have told Prajwal that he had already issued a notice to the youngster for his “suitcase culture” statement recently, and that he should stop repeatedly embarrassing the party.

Sources in the party said Prajwal has been mounting pressure on the party to let him contest the Assembly election. He is planning to contest the election from Rajarajeshwarinagar constituency in Bengaluru.

Both Gowda and his son H D Kumaraswamy have stated that only two members from the Gowda family will be fielded — Kumaraswamy and his brother H D Revanna. Meanwhile, Gowda on Thursday said Prajwal had not participated in the Rajarajeshwarinagar party workers meeting on October 10 as an aspirant.

Gowda told reporters in Bengaluru during the party’s legal cell meeting that the party core committee will finalise the candidate list.

Shivamogga, Jul 24: The protest by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) under the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) entered its 14th day on Friday demanding personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and a salary of at least Rs 12,000 per month.

They have been protesting in different parts of Karnataka since July 10.

Staging a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office, the ASHA workers complained of the government turning a deaf ear to their problems.

Clad in their signature pink saris, they raised slogans to demand appropriate salary for their work and the necessary equipment to protect them from the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

They said that they worked tirelessly during the COVID-19-induced lockdown without any safety. The department only provided them with sub-standard equipment to combat the deadly virus. All they were asking for is a basic pay of Rs 12,000 against the current pay of Rs 6,000.

Prema, an ASHA said, "The authorities are praising our work, clapping for us and showering flowers on us but are not listening to our grievances."

Madikeri, Aug 7: Two days after massive landslides triggered by heavy downpour in Kodagu, five people including a priest are still missing.

The landslide, which originating at Brahmagiri Hills in Talacauvery, swept away two houses on Wednesday night.

This missing people are: Talacauvery temple chief Narayana Achar (70), his wife Shantha (70), brother Ananda Theertha Swami (87) and two assistants — Ravi Kiran (26) and Srinivas (30). Achar’s neighbour had shifted out of Bhagamandala earlier, fearing a landslide.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had to stop rescue operations due to bad weather. The operations resumed today.

“There are many minor landslides on the way to the spot,” said Kodagu Deputy Commissioner C Annies K Joy, adding that the flood situation at Bhagamandala was not permitting earthmovers to reach the spot. Heavy rain between Wednesday and Thursday triggered landslides.

Bhagamandala Panchayat Development Officer Ashok said a notice was issued to the priest’s family to shift out of the house, but they chose to stay back.

On Thursday morning, when the Talacauvery temple staff went to check on Narayana Achar, as he had not reached the temple for the daily puja, they found levelled land and debris where Achar’s house stood. Utensils, puja material and clothes were found nearly 2 km away at Cherangala.

As rains continued over the last few days, many rivers are flowing above the danger levels, forcing people to move to safer places.

Responding to the situation, which is turning grimmer by the day, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, directed ministers to visit rain-hit areas and supervise relief efforts. He has also assured of providing required financial assistance for those affected.
