Dozens of cattle starved to death in goshala; hundreds in critical condition

Hyderabad, Jul 21: Dozens of cattle including cows have starved to death at a goshala in Andhra Pradesh, officials said, highlighting the neglect animals face while people are being killed in the name of cow protection.

Officials on Wednesday found decomposed carcasses rotting away in heaps of dung on the premises of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals (SPCA) shelter at Kakinada in East Godavari district.

“We have recovered 14 carcasses of cattle believed to have died on Tuesday. Four more cattle died on Wednesday,” joint director of animal husbandry V Venkateshwar Rao said.

Many of the around 400 animals that survived were in a bad shape. Twenty-two were moved to “safer locations” on Wednesday while some more were to be shifted out on Thursday.

Rao said 10-12 cattle died earlier but the bodies seemed to have been removed by the organisers.

Independent sources, however, said 11 animals died on Wednesday alone.

“There was no fodder and water at the centre and the cattle have apparently been starving for quite some time,” Rao said.

The animals that survived were virtually in “skin-to-bone condition and were not even in a position to take intravenous fluids and injections”, said Rao, who was part of a team of officials from the animal husbandry, revenue and municipal departments that visited the shelter.

There were no protective sheds and more than 450 cattle were crammed in the space meant for 200 animals, he said.

“There was no attempt to clean the premises, which had knee-deep dung and slush. Heavy rains in the last two days made their condition worse,” Rao said.

Cows and bullocks recovered from animal smugglers were kept at the shelter. The organisers, who volunteered to take care of the animals, had failed in their duty, he said.

SPCA joint secretary Gopal R Surabathula admitted that 20 cattle died in the last few days but said officials were exaggerating the figures.

“On Tuesday, seven cattle died as they were already sick and they could not withstand the heavy rain,” he said.

Most of the animals were brought to them in a bad condition, saying they were not fed properly while being transported.

By the time they were brought to the shelter, they were sick. It was not right to blame SPCA, he said but added they didn’t have the money for fodder.

“We have not been getting any donations. Those who were donating cattle feed and medicines regularly in the past are also not supplying them regularly. What can we do?” he asked.

The district administration has begun cleaning the premises and would provide fodder and medicine to the rescued animals, Rao said.

Like in most states, there is a ban on cow slaughter in Andhra Pradesh but there is no such restriction on bull or buffalo.

As the Centre and states come up with strict laws and punishment against smuggling and slaughtering, old cattle face neglect as farmers don’t have the means to care for the animals.

Farmers and traders are afraid to cull animals, many of which are sent to animals shelters that are crowded. Starvation deaths are quite common in these sheds across the country.

Chennai, July 27: Multi-lingual actress Vijayalakshmi, who attempted suicide yesterday, alleging harassment and bullying by followers of Naam Thamizhar party leader Seeman and Panankattu Padai’s Hari Nadar, is recuperating at a hospital in Chennai.

Vijayalakshmi is known for films like Friends and Boss Engira Baskaran. She recently made headlines for speaking against Seeman and the torture she was allegedly facing from the actor-turned-politician and his party.

In the video which was uploaded on Sunday evening, Vijayalakshmi said, “This is my last video and I have been in tremendous stress in the last four months because of Seeman and his partymen. I tried my level best to survive all these days because of my mother and sister, but I have been humiliated in the media by Harinadar recently.”

She added, “I would like to tell fans who are watching the video just because I was born in Karnataka, Seeman has tortured me a lot. As a woman, I have put up with it to my highest capabilities. I won’t be able handle the pressure anymore. I am from the Pillai community, the same community LTTE leader Prabhakaran is part of. Prabhakaran is the only reason Seeman is who he is today, but now he has been harassing me on social media continuously. You slut shamed me to make me feel the pain and it is up to me to decide on what to do after facing such insults from you. I request my fans not to let Seeman get away from this case. He should never get anticipatory bail. My death should be a big eye-opener to everyone. I don’t want to be a slave to anybody.”

Bengaluru, Jan 29: The Karnataka unit of BJP has urged the Centre and the State governments to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), accusing them of harbouring terrorist tendencies.

Addressing a press meet, N Ravi Kumar, state general secretary of the party, alleged that there was a nexus between the Congress, the PFI and the SDPI.

“Recent reports have exposed the links between the PFI and the Congress,” he said, accusing Congress leader Kapil Sibal of receiving huge funds from PFI to defend their cases in the Supreme Court.

He also accused the organisations as the ones responsible for the death of 23 Hindu activists in Karnataka. Such incidents have proven that both SDPI and PFI are dubious organisations, he said.

PFI is the first kind of organization which is doing community work in all the walks of life.

and providing the helping hands to all the Indian community doing marvelous job.

this is the first organization fighting against corrupt and injustice following the principle of our father of nation mahatma Gandhi’s.

the corrupt and injustice people in the society not ready to accept their policy and trying to stop the voices of justice to the society.

I wish PFI and its sub organizations will continue to support to the society and keep the good work so that people are with you.

RSS is the most active and first ever terrorist organisation in India and it should be banned first.    There is no proof of terrorist activities by SDPI and PFI.    BJP is afraid of these organisations as they give tought resistance to BJP and this is the reason why its planning to ban these organisations.    BJP is doing propoganda only.   Real thread for peace + harmoney in India by sanghis.   We should ban them first.
