Mangaluru, Jan 29: A week after he was posted as the Superintend of Police of Dakshina Kannada , 50-year-old ‘encounter specialist’ Dr Ravikanthe Gowda on Monday assumed the charge with a promise to handle the situation in the sensitive district which witnessed several communal clashes and killings in recent years.

Dr Gowda, who was serving as the SP of Belagavi, had handed over charge to outgoing DK SP Sudheer Kumar Reddy last Tuesday. After receiving guard of honour, today Dr Gowda took over the charge from Additional SP V J Sajeeth.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that his utmost priority will be people-friendly policing and maintaining law and order in the district, which is known for its rich cultures and traditions.

He expressed confidence of creating a good and healthy relationship between the common men and the policemen with the help of his subordinates and higher authorities. “For some reasons, DK is known as sensitive district, but I have enough experience and guidance of seniors to tackle the situation," he said.

Dr Gowda also warned those who have a penchant for posting provocative and abusive messages on social media. “One can utilize social media for healthy discussions. But, if people misuse social media platforms to spread hatred and disrupt peace they will face legal action,” he said.

The multi-talented cop

A native of Mandya, Dr Gowda is the son of well-known short-story writer Besagarahalli Ramanna. Though he became famous as an ‘encounter specialist’ after eliminating three rowdies when he was serving as DCP in Bengaluru, Dr Gowda is also a poet and singer who has a keen interest in Hindustani music. He also holds a doctorate in Kannada literature.

The 50-year-old is well known for his tactful handling and fearlessness in the police fraternity. He believes in being ruthless towards communal forces and underworld elements. His success in thwarting simmering communal tensions and the guts he showed in raiding the treacherous hooch dens in Hubli-Dharwad, has earned him the sobriquet `Mandyada Huli’. Gowda also nabbed underworld don Sudhir Prabhu in Mysuru.

He began his career in policing as a KSPS officer of 1997 batch and became an IPS officer in 2005. His first posting was as DySP of Nanjangud in 1999, after which he went on to become DCP of Hubballi-Dharwad, DCP (crime) in Bengaluru, DCP (law and order), Mysuru, DCP of north east Bengaluru, DCP of central Bengaluru city, and SP of Belagavi.

Mumbai, June 9: A 45-year-old doctor posted in the 108 ambulance service at Malad railway station in Mumbai died of COVID-19 after two hospitals refused admission, in spite of the fact that he was a frontline warrior against coronavirus.

The victim is Dr Shaukat Ali, who was working with the 108 ambulance service for the last four years. A few days ago, he got his blood tests done after his health deteriorated. The result stated typhoid fever following which he started getting treatment at home in Malwani.

Ali's family ran from pillar to post to get him hospitalised in either a private or government hospital, to no avail.

"On Friday, his condition worsened and he started feeling breathless. Despite us calling the 108 ambulance service, no one picked up the call. So after waiting for a while, I and uncle's colleague, Dr Nigam, rushed him to SK Patil hospital in Malad East in an auto. But they refused us stating they were admitting only COVID-19 patients.”

“Then we took him to Desai Hospital, where doctors were initially ready to admit him but later refused stating lack of beds. They said we could take him home as his condition was fine," Zubair Shaikh, Ali's nephew said.

"But his condition worsened. So, I called Dr Nigam and we managed to admit him in Shatabdi hospital. On Sunday, when his results came out stating that he had COVID-19, doctors had already put him on a ventilator, where he passed away in the evening," he added.

Zubair further said, "Had the doctors at Desai Memorial Hospital admitted him, my uncle would have been alive today. It is a matter of great regret that a doctor, who was risking his life during this pandemic, could not get help from his own government hospitals."

Ali's wife and his two children's are in UP, while he was staying with his elder daughter who had recently appeared for HSC exams and preparing for NEET.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: The Congress in Karnataka on Tuesday welcomed the extention of the COVID-19 lockdown till May 3, though it flayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not announcing any programme to support the slowed down economy.

Reacting to the lockdown extension, Congress president D K Shivakumar said it was much needed to control the virus but expressed his displeasure for not offering any relief measure to uplift the economy which is witnessing slump.

"We had expectation that some package would be offered but that was not done. The manufacturing sector, service sector, agriculture sector and even the medical sector was looking for some relief but that was not the talking point of the Prime Minister," Shivakumar told reporters.

However, he maintained that the party would cooperate with the Centre in its fight against COVID-19.

Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah said he was "disappointed" that there was no programme announced to improve the economy, which is at the lowest level in 30 years.

"The economy has collapsed. Never ever in 30 years it had witnessed such a downfall. Industries are closing down.

Agriculture in bad shape. poeple have no money. Villages are in distress," the former chief minister said.

He opined that Modi should have make some announcement with regard to economic programmes and assistance to the weaker section.

"Labourers today are on the streets. Their programmes do not touch them. People had lots of expectations which are now meaningless," Siddaramaiah said.

However, he underlined that he does not oppose the lockdown and appealed to the people to support it wholeheartedly.
