Drop Patil for performing homa to invoke rain God, demands Shettar

June 6, 2017

Bengaluru, Jun 6: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar on Monday criticised the Siddaramaiah government over Water Resources Minister M B Patil conducting a homa to invoke the rain God's blessings recently.jagadish

He demanded that he should be dropped from the state Cabinet immediately. The government's double standards have been exposed since it is talking of enacting an anti-superstitious law but allows its own minister to perform Parjanya homa, he said. “Patil hails from the land of Basavanna (12th century social reformer). But, unfortunately, he is performing such homas,” he stated, raising the issue in the Assembly.

“If the minister believes that the homa will bring rain, then why did he not perform it in the past three years when there was severe drought? If the government believes in such homas, there is no need for it to spend crores of rupees on irrigation...The government had initially planned to spend Rs 20 lakh for the homa at the birth place of the Krishna and the Cauvery rivers. Later, it was dropped due to criticism from various quarters,” he charged.

Shettar described the Parjanya homa performed by the minister as “heights of stupidity” and accused the government of misleading people. He also sought to know why “all those intellectuals” who had been insisting that the government ban superstitious practices, are not raising their voice against Patil and the government.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who claims he has a socialist background, has turned a blind eye to the homa issue, he charged.

Senior BJP leader K G Bopaiah said several officers of the Water Resources department attended the Parjanya homa at Bhagamandala, near the birth place of the river Cauvery in Kodagu district.

Many Congress and JD(S) members tried to counter Shettar saying the BJP government in the past had distributed Gangajal on the occasion of Shivaratri. Members on the Opposition and the Treasury benches indulged in mudslinging on the issue. JD(S) MLA K M Shivalinge Gowda said a BJP leader had gifted elephants to a temple in Kerala in the past. Then, BJP's C T Ravi said a senior politician had performed a month-long homa in the past.

Minister Patil was not present in the House.

Mangaluru, Apr 3: The laboratory at District Wenlock Hospital has initiated trial for Covid 19 testing, close on the heels of receiving permission from state government.

Doctors, elected representatives and stakeholders had repeatedly demanded that a laboratory should be set up in the port city. Without the lab, the samples were sent either to Shivamogga or to Bengaluru for testing. When Heath Minister Sriramulu had visited Mangaluru on March 17, he had promised a lab in the city for testing of the samples.

Accordingly, the government gave permission for starting the laboratory at Wenlock Hospital. The process of registering the lab with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) will be completed shortly. The laboratory will be fully operational only after it is registered.

Bengaluru, Feb 24: Raising questions about the situation in Kashmir, senior Congress leader and former Karnataka chief minister Sidddaramaiah on Monday asked the BJP heading the union government to prove 'normalcy' by hosting US President Donald Trump's event in the valley.

If @BJP4India feels Kashmir has returned to Normalcy, & If @BJP4India feels that there is no govt orchestrated violence. Now is the time to prove the same by hosting @realDonaldTrump's event at Kashmir, Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Amid concerns raised by opposition parties, the government has said efforts have been made to restore normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir which faced months of restrictions after its special status under Article 370 was scrapped in August last year.

Siddaramaiah, who is Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly, in another tweet hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the long wall built near the airport in Ahmedabad allegedly to block the view of a slum, ahead of Trump's visit.

It is time for @realDonaldTrump to get inspired from @narendramodi. Inspiration to build decorative walls to hide not so decorative life!! he tweeted. The opposition Congress in Gujarat had accused the BJP- ruled civic body in Ahmedabad of building the 500-meter long wall to block the view of a slum colony. Refuting the allegations, AMC officials had said the construction of the wall, around four feet in height, was approved much before Trump's Gujarat visit was finalised.

Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump and a high-level delegation, arrived in Ahmedabad around noon on Monday for a little less than a 36-hour-long trip.
