DSK Shivajians Dents Mohun Bagan's Title Hopes in I-League

April 10, 2016

Barabati, Apr 10: Mohun Bagan's hopes of retaining the I-League title virtually went up in smokes after they were held to a 3-3 draw by DSK Shivajians in an enthralling I-League contest at the Vidyasagar Krirangan in Barasat.

In a match that had several twists and turns, Mohun Bagan took a lead through Cornell Glenn (26th and 45+1st) but only to crumble under pressure as Derrick Pereira's side showed a lot of promise through a double strike from Juan Quero Barasso (30th and 33rd).

Haitian forward Sony Norde returned to the playing XI and revived the home team's hopes with his 42nd minute strike before Glenn made it 3-2 in an action packed first-half but it was the Pune outfit's Cameroonian recruit Aser Dipanda who gave the thousands of Mohun Bagan fans heartbreak with his 75th minute strike.

Continuing his fine show Dipanda, who had scored an equaliser against former champions Bengaluru FC in his side's previous match, scored a classic header from a Israil Gurung centre.

Mohun Bagan pressed hard for the winning goal but only to return luckless as they would rue Norde's 27th minute strike which seemed to be a goal as Subrata Pal saved the shot apparently from inside the goal-line.

Earlier, after being set up by substitute Jeje Lalpekhlua, Glenn scored on the rebound to give the home side the lead in front of a rousing support.

A minute later, they almost doubled the lead with Norde firing a shot from the left and goalkeeper Pal latching on to the ball.

The replays showed the Shivajians' custodian inside the goal-line in his follow through but without a goal-line technology, an unlucky Mohun Bagan had to return empty handed.

Adding to the misery, the Shivajians equalised in the space of four minutes with Quero scoring from a Douhou Pierre pass, beating an advancing Debjit Majumder.

Quero silenced the stadium with his double strike in a matter of few minutes when the Spaniard shot diagonally from the left with Debajit beaten by the pace of the ball.

With his partner missing a minute before, it was Norde who restored parity when he found an opening from the top of the box, beating three defenders on his way with his powerful delivery.

Glen brought the atmosphere alive with his goal, finishing with his left-footer that beat a diving Majumder for a crucial lead.

But once again, Mohun Bagan's defence crumbled under pressure as they extended their winless streak to four matches with their last win coming against Mumbai FC on March 13.

The draw meant it's an advantage for 2013-14 champions Bengaluru FC who are second placed with 26 points from 13 matches while their tomorrow's opponents East Bengal have 24 from 13.

Mohun Bagan, who now have 27 points from 15 matches, will be hoping against hope to retain the title as they face Bengaluru FC at home in their concluding round match on April 24.

Coach Sanjoy Sen, who returned after serving a four-match ban, effected three changes in his lineup. While Norde replaced Jeje Lalpekhlua, Prabir Das and Sanjay Balmuchu came in place for Pritam Kotal and Kinshuk Debnath in a defense rejig.

New Delhi, Feb 5: IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has denied any financial dealings with the controversial Rose Valley Group except for it being a sponsor of the side's official jerseys in 2012 and 2013.

KKR issued the clarification after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached Rose Valley's assets worth over Rs 70 crore on Monday. The attached assets include Rs 11.87 crore bank deposits of Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd, that owns KKR, in connection with a money laundering probe.

The franchise said it hopes for the matter to be resolved expeditiously.

"Rose Valley Hotels was one of KKR's IPL jersey sponsors for IPL seasons 2012 and 2013. Rose Valley had paid KKR an approx. amount of Rs 11.87 crore as sponsorship fees," KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement.

"KKR had no other dealings with the Rose Valley Group including Rose Valley’s micro finance business," he added.

The statement added that in July last year, KRSPL (Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd), received a "witness summon" from the ED in connection with an investigation relating to the Rose Valley Group, particularly its micro finance business.

"The ED continues the investigation of Rose Valley. KKR continues to cooperate with the authorities in all respects," Mysore said.

"As part of the investigative process, sometime in October 2019, the ED placed a lien on the said amount earlier paid by Rose Valley to KKR," he asserted.

The directors of KRSPL include Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan, actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta, Mysore and two others.

Mysore was questioned in this case by ED's Kolkata office in October last year.

Apart from KRSPL, the ED attached properties of two other entities -- Multiple Resorts Pvt. Ltd. and Kolkata's St Xavier's College on Monday.

The ED registered an FIR against the Rose Valley group, its chairman Gautam Kundu and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2014.

Kundu was arrested by the agency in Kolkata in 2015 and is in judicial custody at present.

The ED has filed multiple charge sheets in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar courts in this connection and total attachments are now worth Rs 4,750 crore.

The group has been charged by the ED and the CBI with "illegally and fraudulently collecting deposits from public with the intention to cheat them by falsely promising high returns on their investment", thereby perpetrating a ponzi-like fraud.

Melbourne, May 24: Former Australia captain Mark Taylor does not foresee the T20 World Cup scheduled in October-November going ahead and wants the ICC to take a decision during its Board meeting this week.

Taylor also feels that if IPL takes place during the window the T20 World Cup was to be held, the Australian players are likely to be cleared by their Board to take part in the cash-rich league in India.

The ICC Board meets on May 28 to discuss a host of issues related to COVID-19 pandemic, including a revamped schedule and the fate of the men's T20 World Cup in Australia.

"My feeling is the World T20 won't go ahead in Australia in October as planned. Is it going to be viable to have a world tournament in October or November? The answer to that is probably no," Taylor, also a former Cricket Australia (CA) director, was quoted as saying by 'Nine Network'.

"It would probably be good (if a decision is made this week). Because then everyone can start planning and we can stop sitting here and saying 'well ifs, buts or maybes'."

CA chief executive Kevin Roberts has said that a call on the fate of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held from October 18 to November 15, may potentially not come until August.

But players and administrators around the world are keen for some certainty and many have predicted that the 16-team event will soon be postponed.

There are reports that the BCCI is eyeing the October window for the IPL though officially it maintained, that it will not consider new dates of the cash-rich league until the T20 World Cup's fate is decided.

Taylor said the CA wants to keep BCCI happy so the Australia players are likely to be cleared for the IPL if it happens in October.

Pat Cummins, who was bought for a record amount of Rs 15.50 crore in last year's IPL auction, is among the Australians keen to take part in this year's competition.

"The Cricket Australia board will want to keep India happy. So they may want to let the players go to India if the IPL goes ahead," Taylor said.

"Because they want India to come here this summer and play, which will be our biggest summer in terms of dollars. That's the sort of discussion going on. No doubt."

Virat Kohli's team is scheduled to arrive in Australia for a Test tour starting November, which will go along way in addressing CA's financial woes triggered by teh COVID-19 pandemic.
