DU girl dies after drunk Uber driver rams into a truck in Noida

New Delhi, Sep 28: Four Delhi University students were severely injured in an accident where an Uber cab rammed into a truck parked near Sector 16A in the wee hours of Friday, September 23.

dugirlKaayum Pegu, a 20-year-old Delhi University student pursuing English Honours at Miranda House college, was one of the four students inside the Uber cab, driven by a drunk driver. Kaayum succumbed to her injuries and died today.

On September 24, a Facebook post made by Kaayum's brother Rikesh Pegu seeking O positive blood donors for his sister had gone viral with over 18,000 shares.

A report in the news media say that the driver was arrested the same day, produced in court but released on bail. said Amarnath Yadav, Sector 20 station house officer, "An FIR of rash and negligent driving was registered against the driver who was later identified as Viresh."

The other three students injured in the accident are Tanuz Kalita of SGTB Khalsa College, Siddharth Pathak of Swami Shraddhanand College and Akshara Badola of Mata Sundari College.

The four friends were returning from Greater Noida after attending a birthday party. "The cab driver was smoking inside the car. He rammed a stationary vehicle at 3 AM. All of us were injured, but the driver escaped with minor injuries. Instead of calling for help, he abandoned the car and fled the spot," said Kalita, who was discharged after initial treatment. Pathak and Badola are still in the hospital, but are out of danger.

Ruchita Machal, an Assistant Professor at University of Delhi posted "Kaayum is no longer with us" on her Facebook profile, and sought action from Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal against the Uber driver.

The report quotes Pathak as saying, "Pegu sat in the middle of the backseat and was thrown off the seat and hit the windshield and the dashboard, under the accident's impact."

A friend of Pegu said that Uber is not taking any responsibility for the incident and have left Pegu and family at 'the mercy of the cab driver's insurance'.

"We are pained to learn about the accident and are closely engaged with the victims' families to provide all assistance," said an Uber spokesperson as per the report.

Meerut: The licence of a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut has been suspended after a video showing its staff member providing fake Covid-19 report had gone viral.

"A video had gone viral in Meerut. We have registered a case in this regard. We have suspended the licence of the nursing home. Today, we have sealed it also. Strict action will be taken against anybody who will do something like this in this time of crisis,” said Anil Dhingra, District Magistrate, Meerut.

In the video, the person can be heard saying that they provide Covid-19 negative report for Rs 2,500, Dhingra stated.

Meerut CMO Rajkumar said, “In the video, a man from the hospital can be heard saying that he can arrange COVID-19 negative report and the person can get operation or other things done. We have identified the man. We have suspended the licence of the hospital and an FIR has been registered.”

Gonda, Apr 9: A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room as he was missing his wife stuck at her parents' place due to the lockdown, police said.

The incident took place in Radha Kund locality here on Wednesday, they said, adding the deceased has been identified as Rakesh Soni, 32.

As per information, Soni's wife had gone to her parents' place and was stuck there due to the lockdown and he was missing her due to which he committed suicide, Inspector Alok Rao said.

A probe is on in the mater, he said.

Tikamgarh, Jul 25: Promise of providing housing to the poor has been made by both Centre as well as State governments but a Dalit family in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh is forced to live in a toilet for the last several years.

However, the administration denied that the family is living in the toilet.

Maganlal Ahirwar, his wife and four children live in Keshavgarh Gram Panchayat of Mohangarh area of Tikamgarh district. All of them have been living in the toilet for four years. Ahirwar's wife Phula Devi said she told the authorities several times that her family didn't get house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, but no one listened. The couple even got their daughter married in the same toilet.

They even got an electricity connection and gas connection under the Ujjwala scheme.

Mohangarh tehsildar Dr. Abhijeet Singh told media persons, "I got to know about the case and have asked for the report. Maganlal Ahirwar came to the office two-three days ago and denied that he was living in the toilet with his family. He has an ancestral house in the village."

He might have lived in a toilet earlier but currently he is not living there, Dr. Singh added.
