Kasargod, August 28: The police on Monday arrested a person on charges of circulating fake currency notes.

The arrested is K.A. Abdul Nazeer, 42, a resident of Anangoor here.

Circle Inspector of Police Babu Peringath said that Nazeer was a known 'hawala' money carrier in north Kerala. He secured fake currency of the face value of Rs.24 lakh from one Osman, who was arrested by a team led by Circle Inspector C.K. Sunil Kumar recently.

Nazeer's arrest was made on the basis of tips given by Osman. Nazeer destroyed notes of the face value of Rs.7 lakh by burning it after the arrest of Abdul Jabbar from near Cheruvathur on August 18.

The police team which raided Nazeer's residence recovered the burnt remains of the currency, Mr. Peringath said. Nazeer reportedly told the police that the rest of the notes were handed over Osman as directed by his handlers in Dubai. Nazeer's arrest was made under IPC section 489(b) (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency notes or bank notes) and 489(c) (possession of forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).

A local court in Kanhangad remanded him to two weeks in judicial custody.
