Lucknow, Sep 16: Early trends in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh showed a significant setback for the BJP.
Bypolls were held on September for 11 assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat.
The initial trends showed BJP ahead in four assembly seats and was trailing even in the constituencies it had vacated four months ago. The ruling Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh Yadav was ahead in seven seats in early counting, making major gains.
This is a sharp comedown for the BJP after its virtual sweep of Uttar Pradesh in the national election, when it won 71 of the state's 80 Lok Sabha seats.
