EC efforts to increase poll per cent in the IT hub goes in vain

Bengaluru, Apr 19: The Election Commission efforts to give a boost to increase of voting per cent in the IT hub Bengaluru went in vain as the so called learned voters in the State Capital failed to turn up at booths in the first phase of polling held yesterday for 14 seats in Karnataka.

The polling reported in the four LS seats including Bangalore rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central and Bangalore South was in down trend, according to reports available in the EC office.

The per centage has gone to minus as compared to 2014 MP election and minus 5.27 per cent was reported in Bengaluru North where 51.26 per cent polling reported as against 56.53 per cent (2014) in the polling held yesterday and the downward trend was reported also in Bengaluru Central (50.84 per cent in 2019, 55.64 per cent in 2014--minus 4.80 per cent), Bengaluru Rural (64.09 per cent and 66.45 per cent- minus 2.36 per cent) and Bengaluru South 54.2 and 55.75 per cent, minus 1.55 per cent).

Mumbai, Jul 1: The Maharashtra government will set up a Marathi medium college in Kolhapur for the Marathi- speaking people residing in the border areas of Karnataka, a minister said on Tuesday.

Higher and technical education minister Uday Samant, in a statement here, said the decision has been taken with a view to cater to the educational needs of the Marathi-speaking population residing in the neighbouring state.

He said the new state-run college will be a sub-centre of the Shivaji University at Kolhapur.

The Kolhapur district collector will provide a five- acre plot for the proposed college following which all necessary official permissions will be given, Samant said.

The college will start functioning from the next academic year, the release said.

Acommittee headed by Shivaji University vice- chancellor Nitin Karmalkarwill work out the modalities for establishing the educational institute, it added.

The border areas of Karnataka have a sizeable Marathi- speaking population.

Mangaluru, Jun 29: A hospital set up in 1848 in the Port City has to remain closed till July 5 as majority of the Doctors and Staff at Lady Goschen Government Hospital are quarantined after coming in contact with a COVID-19 infected person.

Hospital Medical Superintendent said that both in-patient and out-patient wings of the hospital will remain closed till July 5 as there is a need to fumigate and sanitise all the departments of the hospital. Patients for treatment under 'Ayushman Bharat – Arogya Karnataka' scheme will be sent to private medical colleges with the referral card from the hospital. The hospital will start functioning normally from July 6.

The Lady Goschen Government Hospital, earlier known as the maternity Hospital, is the oldest hospital in the district and dates back to 1848.

Mangaluru, May 24: A 42 –year-old man who was the secondary contact of P 1233 has been tested positive for COVID 19, in Dakshina Kannada on Sunday.

The man is being treated at the designated COVID-19 hospital in Mangaluru. With this, DK has registered a total of 66 positive cases with 34 active cases.

P 1233 was a 30-year-old man who had inter-state travel history from Maharashtra, said DK DC Sindhu B Rupesh.

The news case took the district's covid tally to 66 and 34 of them are active cases.
