Either we win election or we are going to lose country: Trump

October 15, 2016

Washington, Oct 15: Asserting that the US cannot afford to have another four years of Obama Administration, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said that failing to win the upcoming general elections would amount to losing the country.

dt"Either we win this election or we're going to lose our country, because four more years of Obama, you can't take," Trump told his supporters at an election rally in North Carolina yesterday.

"I know it's not about me, it's about you, and that's why I'm doing this. I didn't need to do this, but it's about you. It's about bringing our country, making our country great again. I'm taking these slings and arrows for you, so we can have our borders, so we can get back our jobs, so we can be a safe nation again," he said.

Terming Barack Obama as an "incompetent president", 70-year old Trump claimed that the US president did not know what he was doing.

"He's out campaigning all day long, he talking about me like he knows me. I don't know him, he doesn't know me. And why doesn't some woman maybe come up and say what they say falsely about me, they could say about him. They could say it about anybody. I'll tell you what, better be careful, because they could say it about anybody, anybody at all," he alleged.

"Obama is in incompetent, as a president, he's about as bad as it gets. Look at what's happening, how Iran is taunting us. Look at what's going on, look at the world. He gives away USD 400 million in cash, but it turns out to USD 1.7 billion in cash. Gives them USD 150 billion," he said amidst booing from the audience.Noting that Obama is an "embarrassment", Trump alleged the US president's Middle East policy was a "total disaster".

"We have an incompetent president. I hate to say it, but it 100 per cent true. All he's doing, instead of working on your jobs and your companies leaving for Mexico and other places, he's campaigning for crooked Hillary. That's all he does," Trump alleged.

Referring to the Wikileaks revelations, Trump alleged Clinton was saying something in the public but has a different opinion in private.

"WikiLeaks documents, Hillary Clinton speaking in secret, a secret Brazilian bank. Hillary Clinton said 'my dream is a hemisphere common market with open trade and open borders," he said.

"Even though she doesn't say that, but that's what she said in a very, very secret meeting. The e-mails show that behind closed doors speaking to these international bankers, Hillary Clinton's pledged to destroy the sovereignty of the US," Trump said.

He said a Trump administration will secure and defend the US' borders like never before. "We will build a wall. Crooked Hillary also wants a 550 per cent increase in Syrian refugees to pour into our country," he said.

Trump said he will keep that the radical Islamic terrorists "the hell out" of the country. "At the same time, we're going to take care of our military and we're going to take care of our great, great, great veterans," he said.

"We're going to stand up to China, we're going to stop their currency manipulation and product dumping, which is killing us. And they don't follow the rules and, if they don't, we're going to institute tariffs. When they send something into our country - and, believe me, they're going to obey our rules so quickly, you have no idea. And we'll end up with a better relationship with China than we do now," he said.

Referring to South China Sea, Trump said the Chinese were building a massive fortress against everything.

"A massive fortress in the South China Sea. Yet they're ripping us off. Now, if they're going to rip us off, you wouldn't think they'd be building fortresses. They have no respect for our President - which I can understand that - they have no respect for Obama, they have no respect for our country, and they're getting away with murder," he said.

Jun 13: Requiring the wearing of masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in areas at the epicenter of the global pandemic may have prevented tens of thousands of infections, a new study suggests.

Mask-wearing is even more important for preventing the virus' spread and the sometimes deadly COVID-19 illness it causes than social distancing and stay-at-home orders, researchers said, in the study published in PNAS: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.

Infection trends shifted dramatically when mask-wearing rules were implemented on April 6 in northern Italy and April 17 in New York City - at the time among the hardest hit areas of the world by the health crisis - the study found.

"This protective measure alone significantly reduced the number of infections, that is, by over 78,000 in Italy from April 6 to May 9 and over 66,000 in New York City from April 17 to May 9," researchers calculated.

When mask-wearing went into effect in New York, the daily new infection rate fell by about 3% per day, researchers said. In the rest of the country, daily new infections continued to increase.

Direct contact precautions - social distancing, quarantine and isolation, and hand sanitizing - were all in place before mask-wearing rules went into effect in Italy and New York City. But they only help minimize virus transmission by direct contact, while face covering helps prevent airborne transmission, the researchers say.

"The unique function of face covering to block atomization and inhalation of virus-bearing aerosols accounts for the significantly reduced infections," they said. That would indicate "that airborne transmission of COVID-19 represents the dominant route for infection."

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday urged organizers of large gatherings that involve "shouting, chanting or singing to strongly encourage the use of cloth face coverings to lower the risk of spreading the coronavirus."

London, Feb 9: A US court has rejected a Turkish attempt to dismiss civil cases brought by protesters who were violently attacked in Washington by Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s security officers.

The incident took place in May 2017 during a visit to the US by the Turkish president. About a dozen bodyguards beat-up a group demonstrating outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence in Washington.

The attack, which was caught on video, left nine people injured and further strained US relations with Turkey.

While criminal charges against the security guards were dropped within a year, around the same time Turkey released a US pastor, the victims pressed ahead with a civil case.

On Thursday, a federal court denied Turkey’s request to have the two cases thrown out on the grounds that it should have sovereign immunity from legal proceedings.

US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly said the protesters had not posed a threat and were merely gathered on a sidewalk outside the residence at Sheridan Circle when Erdogan’s security burst through a police line and attacked them.

“The Turkish security forces did not have the discretion to violently physically attack the protesters, with the degree and nature of force which was used, when the protesters were standing, protesting on a public sidewalk,” she said. “And, Turkish security forces did not have the discretion to continue violently physically attacking the protesters after the protesters had fallen to the ground or otherwise attempted to flee.”

The judge said Turkey “has not met its burden of persuasion to show that it is immune from suit in these cases.”

The ruling was welcomed by the victims of the attack, which Erdogan stopped to watch as he made his way from his car to inside the residence.

Wellington, Mar 25: New Zealand has declared a state of emergency as it prepares to go into an unprecedented lockdown late Wednesday for about a month.

The declaration temporarily gives police and the military extra powers. And Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says any New Zealanders returning home from overseas who show symptoms of COVID-19 will be put in isolation at an approved facility.

“I have one simple message for New Zealanders today as we head into the next four weeks: ‘stay at home,’” Ardern said. “It will break the chain of transmission and it will save lives.”

Ardern said exceptions include people working crucial jobs, those leaving to pick up essentials like groceries, and those engaging in solitary exercise.

The country has 205 reported cases of the virus, although Ardern said that number could rise into the thousands before it begins to recede even with the strict measures being taken.
