Election Commission warns Mamata: May cancel Lok Sabha polls in Bengal if transfer orders defied

New Delhi, Apr 8: The Election Commission has said that it might cancel the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal if the state government doesn’t comply with its order on transfer of the officials.

Election_CommissionBanerjee had on Monday had defied EC orders, saying she would “not remove a single officer” and was ready to face the consequences.

Mamata’s remarks came hours after the poll panel ordered the transfer of five superintendents of police and three district magistrates and additional district magistrates.

In its communication to the state chief secretary, the EC ordered the transfer of Birbhum SP Alok Rajoria, West Midnapore SP Bharati Ghosh, Murshidabad SP Humayun Kabir, Burdwan SP M H Mirza, Malda SP R K Yadav, North 24 Parganas DM Sanjay Bansal, Mathurapur Addl DM Alokesh Prasad Roy and West Midnapore Addl DM Arindam Dutta. In its letter, the EC said the officials should be transferred to “non-election related and non-field” posts by Tuesday.

However, the TMC supremo challenged the EC saying, “I will not remove a single officer. Let the EC come and arrest me. I throw this challenge to the EC. I will put in my resignation… I want to see how the EC takes charge of the state’s law and order. I will not be responsible if Jangalmahal is on fire again. How can they transfer so many officers without consulting the state government.”

Tirupur, Feb 20: Nineteen people died in a collision between a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus and a truck near Avinashi town of Tirupur district on Thursday morning here.

The bus was on its way to Ernakulam in Kerala from Bengaluru in Karnataka when the mishap occurred.

Deputy Tehsildar of Avinashi Town informed, "19 people that include 14 men and 5 women, died in the collision between the bus and the truck near Avinashi town."

The bodies have been taken to Tirupur government hospital.
Further details are awaited.

New Delhi, Jun 26: With the highest single-day spike of 17,296 COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 4,90,401 on Friday, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The country also saw 407 deaths in the last 24 hours, which pushed the death toll to 15,301.

The total number of cases includes 1,89,463 active cases, 2,85,637cured/discharged/migrated cases, as per the MoHFW.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of samples tested up to June 25 is 77,76,228; the number of samples tested on 25 June is 2,15,446.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country with 1,47,741 cases. The active cases in the state are 63,357. The number of people cured or discharged stands at 77,453 while the death toll is at 6,931.

Delhi has so far reported 73,780 cases. The active cases in the national capital stood at 26,586. While the cured and discharged numbers stood at 44,765. The death toll in the city is 2,429.

Tamil Nadu has so far reported 70,977. With active cases at 30,067 and the number of cured or discharged at 39,999, while the death toll stood at 911.

Feb 2: The Supreme court on Monday decided to hear on March 4 a plea seeking registration of FIRs against politicians for hate speeches which allegedly led to violence in the national capital.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde agreed to hear the plea filed by riots victims.

The petition was mentioned for urgent listing by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the riots victims.

Gonsalves said that the Delhi High Court has deferred for four weeks the matters related to riots in the national capital despite the fact that people are still dying due to the recent violence.
