Election not a referendum on Siddaramaiah govt: Parameshwara

Bangalore, Apr 18: The ruling Congress in Karnataka today asserted it would win more than 20 Lok Sabha seats from the state but there would be no change of Chief Minister if the poll outcome was not in line with their expectations as it was "not a referendum" on Siddaramaiah government.

"Responsibility of this election is both on me as the party President and the Chief Minister as the head of the Congress Legislature party, but one cannot call this election as referendum on our government in the state," KPCC President G Parameshwara told reporters.

Responding to a question, he said "there will be no change in the state leadership and Chief Minister if the results are not in line with our expectations."

Siddaramaiah has played for high stakes in the election held yesterday, with the party reportedly setting a target of about 20 seats. A below-than-expected performance may weaken his position within Congress and pose a challenge to his leadership.

Parameshwara said the party high command had not fixed any target.

"We will win more than twenty seats, I have been saying this since beginning....The information that we have gathered from our district level units says that we will win more than twenty seats," Parameshwara said.

Accusing BJP and JDS of indulging in "adjustment politics," he said, "according to ground level reports gathered by the party there was adjustment politics played out between JDS and BJP during this election as few JDS candidates withdrew their nominations to favour BJP."

Expressing happiness that voting percentage in the state has reached 65 which is more compared to 2009 Lok Sabha polls, Parameshwara said, "Though not satisfactory as we expected more turnout, I'm happy that the polls were held successfully and peacefully in the state."

Parameshwara also demanded fool-proof voter list by the election commission so that names don't go missing from the voters list.

Jan 15: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Tuesday that the Muslim population in India increased manifold since the partition because they were given special rights and facilities, according to a report by The Indian Express.

"The Muslim population in India has increased manifold since 1947, it has gone up by seven to eight times. No one has any objection. If they, as citizens of the country, work for development, they are welcome. Their population has increased because they have been given special rights and facilities. All possible steps were taken to ensure their growth," Adityanath said while addressing a rally in Gaya organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

He asked the audience, "But what happened in Pakistan?" Claiming that the Hindu population in Pakistan had decreased since 1947, he asked why it was so.

Yogi said that the countrywide anti-CAA protests are a "conspiracy" hatched from afar by those resentful of a united and grand India and these are being aided by a "crooked" opposition. He further charged that those opposing the legislation were committing the "paap" (sin) of working against national interests.

"For taking such a step, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah deserve acclaim. Instead, they are being attacked", Yogi lamented.

He himself contradicts his statements. He claims the Muslim population rose 8-9 (according to him) times since 1947. If he was educated its simple 73 years have passed the population grows. Still, the Muslim population is only a minority against the majority. He talks about special rights and facilities given yes agreed but not by him it's by the Constitution of India and for all the minorities. So it's not you its Constitution of India.  The majority of the people are against the act CAA is against the very fundamental of the Constitution of India which PM & HM are taking away from the people. If you disagree, disrespect, go against it then you are against the country itself in Hindi deshdruhi.

New Delhi, Apr 11: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with chief ministers, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday urged CMs of states where the party is in power to unanimously demand for transfer of cash to every poor family.

He said the poor have lost their jobs and have exhausted their savings. They are now standing in lines to get free food, the former Union finance minister said.

Chidambaram said remonetising the poor would cost only Rs 65,000 crore, which is economically viable.

"Chief ministers Amarinder Singh, Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, V Narayanasami, Uddhav Thackeray and E Palaniswani should tell the prime minister today that just as LIVES are important LIVELIHOOD of the poor is important, he tweeted.

"The poor have lost their jobs or self-employment in the last 18 days. They have exhausted their meagre savings. Many are standing in line for food," Chidambaram said.

Can the state stand by and watch them go hungry," he asked, adding that chief ministers should demand that cash be transferred to every poor family immediately.

"Remonetise the poor should be their unanimous demand," Chidambaram said.

Chandigarh, April 2: A 59-year-old woman and her 10-month-old granddaughter have tested positive for novel coronavirus in Chandigarh on Thursday.

According to the Chandigarh Health Department, they are family contacts of the NRI couple that tested positive for COVID-19 earlier.
With this, the total cases in the Union Territory rose to 18.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 1,965 on Thursday, after as many as 328 new cases were reported, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. So far, at least 50 people have lost their lives due to the virus.
