By-elections will decide BSY govt’s fate: HDK

Mysuru, Sept 21: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday said that there will be no coalition with Congress in the upcoming by-elections and these elections will decide the fate of the present government in the state.

As Election Commission on Saturday announced the Assembly by-elections scheduled to take place in the state's 15 constituencies, Kumaraswamy during the wormers meeting here asserted that "the upcoming by-elections will decide the fate of the present government and his party will content and fight in all the constituencies."

"I am not in favour of fighting elections with the correlation of Congress. Many Congress leaders have already cleared their stand about fighting elections together. Most of the Congress leaders don't want to contest elections together and hence we have decided the same, not to contest the elections together," said Kumaraswamy.

"In the by-elections, we will definitely win in Hunsur where H Vishwanath, former JDS state president contested. There will be no coalition with Congress in by-elections," he added.

Kumaraswamy further said that his party needs to win in eight out of 15 constituencies to destabilise the Yediyurappa government.

"Other parties in the state are trying to create confusion among the citizens and that's the reason we have called this meeting in order to convey our clear message to both the national parties. JDS is a cadre-based party and we will continue to fight like this," he added.

Kumaraswamy stated that he has waived off farmers loans and fulfilled the promises made before the elections but did not get much publicity for the same.

The by-elections in Karnataka will be held on October 21 in 15 constituencies that were vacated by rebel MLAs of Congress and JD(S). The counting of votes will take place in the same week on October 24.

Orange alert in Dakshina Kannada as southwest monsoon hits Kerala

Manglauru, Jun 1: The southwest monsoon has made an onset over Kerala, marking the commencement of the four-month long rainfall season, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.

"The southwest monsoon has made an onset over Kerala," IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

The four-month monsoon season from June to September accounts for 75 per cent of rainfall in the country.

Private forecaster Skymet Weather on May 30 had declared arrival of monsoon, but the IMD had differed, saying conditions were not ripe then for such an announcement.

Orange alert

Meanwhile, coastal Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, which is receiving sporadic rains for past couple of days, is on orange alert.

Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh declared the orange alert following IMD’s prediction of heavy rainfall in the region.

Vidya Dinker, Naveenchandra to participate in national level consultation on Urban Governance

Mangalore, Jan 21: Former city councillor and social activists Naveenchandra and social activist Vidya Dinker have been invited to participate in two-day National Level Consultation on Urban Governance which will take place on January 22 and 23 at Juniper Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Urban governance stakeholders of 20 states and one union territory will be participating in this national level consultative seminar. The participants will include elected representatives, NGO representatives and urban planning experts. The seminar is being organised by Mumbai based Prajna Foundation, which has undertaken an in-depth study of the governance of the 20 states and one union territories.

Having served several terms as a corporator of Mangaluru City Corporation, Naveenchandra is knowledgeable in matters relating to urban governance. He is very popular in his constituency. Vidya Dinker is a well known city based social activist. She is the Coordinator, Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development.

Vidya Dinker I can understand but Naveen i don't know on what qualifications and credentials he has been selected and to say he is Popular in his constituency is a Misnormer . Just visit kambla ward once and speak to people and you can understand it better !!!

Centre favouring Karnataka over Belgaum border dispute, says Uddhav Thackeray

Mumbai, Feb 3: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has accused the BJP-led central government of siding with Karnataka in the Supreme Court over the Belgaum border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

"I am committed toward a unified Maharashtra... Whatever is happening in Belgaum is shocking. I will meet the committee looking after this matter. The central government is a guardian of all states and is expected to be unbiased towards all states, but it is shocking that Centre is taking sides with Karnataka in Supreme Court for last the five years. This is really shocking," Thackeray said in an interview with Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana.

On December 7 last year, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had chaired a high-level meeting over the border dispute between the two states.

It was decided in the meeting that attempts will be made to get fast track hearing on the border issue in the Supreme Court.

Earlier on January 19, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had said that Belgaum border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra is a long-pending dispute but can be resolved if Union Home Minister wants.

"If Home Ministry can resolve Kashmir issue and abrogate Article 370 then I think this border issue can be resolved too if Amit Shah wants. The matter comes under the Home Ministry. It is a long-pending issue. He should pay attention to this too," he said while speaking to ANI in Belagavi.
