Emergency a black spot on the golden history of nation: Modi

Mumbai, Jun 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday slammed the Congress on the 43rd anniversary of imposition of Emergency, saying India was “turned into a jail for the selfish personal interests” of the Gandhi family.

Addressing a meeting in Mumbai organised by the BJP to mark the Emergency anniversary, Mr. Modi said the day needed to be observed to re-dedicate oneself to the protection of the Constitution and democracy.

“Emergency is a black spot on the golden history of the nation. Observing black day today is not just to criticise the Congress for its sin of imposing Emergency but also to create an awareness for protection of Constitution and democracy,” Mr. Modi said.

Mr. Modi lashed out at the Congress for “spreading illusionary fear” about the Constitution, Dalits and minorities facing danger (in the BJP-led regime). He said the Congress could never improve. “For promotion of self-interest, they destroyed their own party.”

“For selfish interests, the Congress turned the country into a jail by imprisoning Opposition leaders. For them, the country and democracy have no value. Instead of [Indira Gandhi] quitting as Prime Minister after the court verdict, Emergency was imposed. How can these people talk about safeguarding the Constitution,” he said.

“When Kishore Kumarji refused to sing for them [the Congress], his songs were not allowed to be played on the radio,” he pointed out.

'No questions about EVMs after Karnataka polls'

Mr. Modi accused the Congress of criticising electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the functioning of the Election Commission after they were reduced to 44 seats from 400 in the Lok Sabha. “They did not question the EVMs after the recent Karnataka elections,” he added.

He also criticised the Congress for moving an impeachment motion against the Supreme Court chief justice.

“They never imagined that they can face corruption charges and be out on bail. Hence, the Congress decided to move an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India,” he said.

The government was committed to protecting the Constitution and upholding democratic values. “The Constitution is not just a book but a means to fulfil aspirations and wishes of the common man.”

Mr. Modi also paid tributes to Ramnath Goenka of The Indian Express, Kuldeep Nayar and Statesman newspaper for “standing up” against Emergency.

“Many of them were not our supporters either. Nayar is critical of us. But they fought for democracy,” he said.

Chennai, Jun 10: DMK MLA J Anbazhagan who had tested positive for coronavirus and was on ventilator support from June 3 passed away at a hospital in Chennai on Wednesday.

Coincidently, today is the 62nd birthday of the MLA.

"Anbazhagan J, who has been fighting for his life with severe COVID 19 pneumonia rapidly deteriorated early this morning. In spite of full medical support including mechanical ventilation at our COVID facility, he succumbed to his illness. He was declared dead at 08:05 hours on the 10th of June 2020," the hospital said in a statement.

In 2001, Anbazhagan was elected from T Nagar Assembly constituency. He served for five years.

Later in 2011, he was elected to Tamil Nadu Assembly from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni seat. The DMK leader was re-elected from the same constituency in 2016.

New Delhi, Apr 24: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has termed the government decision to freeze Dearness Allowance of Central government employees for a year as "insensitive and inhuman."

The former Congress President in a tweet said: "Lakhs and crores are being spent on the Bullet Train and New Delhi's Central Vista which should have been suspended, but the government has deducted DA of Central government employees and pensioners... It is insensitive and inhuman."

"The tragic part is that by deducting this amount from January 1, 2020 up to 30th June, 2021 for a period of 1.5 years, the government of India proceeds to deduct almost Rs 38 thousand crore from the income of these middle class government employees and pensioners, who rely completely on the pay and pensions that they receive," said Randeep Surjewala, chief spokesperson of Congress.

There are about 50 lakh such serving government employees and about 62 lakh pensioners.

"Even more tragic and objectionable is the fact that the government of India has not even spared our armed forces. The government has deducted Rs 11 thousand crore of the 15 lakh serving armed forces personnel and nearly 26 lakh military pensioners. What is their fault? They are serving the nation in times of all types of crises," said Surjewala.

The Congress alleged that the government did not spare the savings scheme.

Instead of curbing the wasteful expenditure, the government has been constantly hitting at the income of government employees and the middle class, it added.

New Delhi, Jan 10: An IPS officer's thumb was bitten by a woman protester when he was pushing back agitators, who were trying to march towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan here on Thursday, police sources said.

The protesters had gathered after a call was given by JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh to march towards President's House to demand the removal of University's Vice Chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar.

Ingit Pratap Singh, a 2011 batch officer, who is currently posted as the additional deputy commissioner of the southwest district, was injured in the attack.

According to sources, Singh was trying to pull a male protester when the woman, in a bid to shield her friend, bit Singh's left thumb.
