'Encounter specialist' Daya Nayak reinstated in police force

Mumbai, Jan 12: The famed 'encounter specialist' police officer Daya Nayak had been reinstated in the state police department, a source said on Monday.

Sub-inspector Nayak's suspension had been cancelled, a senior police officer on Monday said on condition of anonymity.

Mr Nayak was suspended in June last year for not joining duty and being on sick leave for a very long time. At that time his posting was in Nagpur area.

Before that, after being under suspension for around six years, Mr Nayak was reinstated in June 2012.

A 1995-batch police officer, he was suspended in 2006 after the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested him on the charge of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

In 2010, the Supreme Court quashed the charges against him. He was reinstated in 2012 and posted in Local Arms wing of the department.

After a brief stint there, he was transferred to the west region (Bandra to Andheri) of the city which is considered as a 'high-profile' zone in the police department.

Man arrested under Wildlife Protection Act for biting snake to death in Karnataka

Kolar, May 7: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for biting a snake and peeling off its skin at Mustur village in Kolar district of Karnataka.

Mulbagal range forest officer KN Ravikeerthi said forest officials nabbed Kumar, a construction worker, at Mustur on Wednesday and booked him under the Wildlife Protection Act. He was under the influence of alcohol.

Ravikeerthi said Kumar's offence is non-bailable and attracts a jail term of up to three years. The remains of the snake were collected and sent to a lab to ascertain its species. Forest officials said the snake Kumar bit was not a viper as was reported earlier but a rat snake.

On Tuesday, Kumar was riding back home after buying liquor when the snake ca me under his bike's wheels. He tossed the injured snake around his neck, bit it and peeled off its skin. Kumar said the snake had troubled him in the past.

BSY betrayed people by not fulfilling Rs 1,610-cr package promise: Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, May 27: Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government for allegedly "betraying" the people by not fulfilling its Rs 1,610 crore COVID-19 package promise.

Taking a dig at Yediyurappa over the matter, the Congress leader tweeted, "Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has betrayed people by not fulfilling his Rs 1,610 crore package promise. He seems to be following his @BJP4India leader @PMOIndia @narendramodi."

"Crisis and vulnerability should not be misused for political gains and BJP for India is insensitive towards the same," the former Karnataka Chief Minister said.

On May 6, Yediyurappa had urged migrant workers to stay back as construction activities have resumed and announced a Rs 1,610 crores COVID-19 financial package for the state.

"A package of Rs 1,610 crores will be released as COVID-19 financial relief. One time compensation of Rs 5,000 will be given to 2,30,000 barbers and 7,75,000 drivers," the Chief Minister said.

Referring to media reports, Siddarmiah cornered the state government for asking the licence to release funds for unorganised sector workers.

"How can we expect washermen and other unorganised sector workers to have licence for their work?" he asked.

It looks like Karnataka Chief Minister is very far from reality, he added.

24-year-old rider dies after scooter on the wrong side collides with car in Udupi

Udupi, Aug 1: A young rider lost his life after a head-on collision between a scooter and a car on K G Road in Udupi last evening.

The deceased has been identified as Praveen Ganiga (24), a resident of Kodavoor in Malpe.

According to police Praveen was riding his scooter on the wrong side of the road. The car was plying from Brahmavar to Udupi.

The people on board car suffered minor injuries in the mishap. A case was registered at Brahmavar police station and investigations are on.
