End suspicion; spread love: Mangaluru Bishop’s message to all communities

Mangaluru, Sept 15: Peter Paul Saldhana was Saturday ordained as the 14th bishop of Mangaluru Diocese at the episcopal ordination and consecration celebration at Rosario Cathedral here.

According to tradition, outgoing bishop Aloysius Paul DSouza as the main consecrator, along with Bengaluru archbishop Peter Machado and Udupi diocese bishop Jerald Isaac Lobo as co-consecrators, ordained the new bishop.

Bishop Aloysius D’Souza anointed the new bishop with holy oil, handed over the crosier and mitre and led him to the bishop’s seat. Saldhana was then officially declared as the bishop of Mangaluru diocese.

Messenger Javier D Fernandez G Papal Nuncio to India read out the mandate from the Holy See in Latin before the consecration ceremony, while Father Joseph Martis read it same in English and Father Victor DMello in Konkani.

After the consecration, all the priests of the diocese paid honour and obedience to the new bishop.

A large number of priests from various congregations in Karnataka and other states, priests from other diocese and a huge crowd of faithfuls were present on the occasion.

‘Break walls of suspicion’

Speaking after his ordination ceremony, the new bishop expressed concern over communities building walls of suspicion, and said that there is a need of a free society where the air of love spread unhindered. “Because of the walls of suspicion, people are not in a position to respect the feelings of one another,” he said.

“The hate among us should be absorbed like a sponge and the fragrance of compassion should spread,” he said and promised to act as a bridge in cementing relations among communities.

Minister for Housing and Urban Development U.T. Khader, Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath, MLCs Ivan D’Souza and B.M. Farooq, Mayor Bhaskar K., Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh and Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar also participated in the function.

Bengaluru, Feb 18:  A fan of Kannada film star Darshan smashed the face of a police constable with a boulder when the latter asked him to come in the queue to a party to celebrate the star’s birthday.

The incident happened past midnight on February 15 near the residence of the film star where his birthday was being celebrated.

The injured police constable has been identified as Devaraj, attached to the Jnana Bharathi police station.

The film star’s managers had not made arrangements to handle a huge crowd that gathered near his residence and police had a tough time controlling the crowd.

Constable Devaraj was deputed to duty at the party and tried to get the crowd to fall in line.

As the police carried out a mild lathi-charge to control the crowd, a fan of Darshan came up with a boulder in his hand and smashed the face of the constable Devaraj from very close distance. The constable collapsed on the spot and the attacker ran away.

The impact was such that Devaraj’s nose was fractured and he sustained an eye injury. He was admitted to a private hospital and his condition is said to be serious.

The R R Nagar police have registered a case under IPC sections 353 and 352. The cops have launched a hunt for the accused and they are obtaining CCTV footage from the spot.

A complaint is being registered against the organisers of the event and an investigation is on. Several neighbours of Darshan have also complained to the police about the chaos on February 15.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the BJP and RSS for taking out a route march in Ramanagara against the controversial Jesus Christ statue.

“Just because the BJP won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress workers need not lose hope. If the Congress and JD(S) had worked out a better strategy, the BJP would not have won even 10 seats. We will correct our mistakes,” the former Congress minister said.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has failed to do well in assembly polls and has been losing power in many states. People are hitting the streets protesting against its policies such as CAA and NRC, he said.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of not being able to digest Congress’ victory in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha segment in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said that the BJP is trying hard to make inroads into the constituency represented by his brother D K Suresh. “Let them take out route march, we don’t care,” he said.

“We all know what the BJP did during the Lok Sabha elections, and the media reported how much money they spent in the elections. What was the Election Commission doing? Was the Income Tax Department sitting with its eyes closed? Why did they conduct raids only in Hassan, Shivamogga and Mandya districts,” he asked.

He alleged that false cases were slapped when him and other leaders, including H D Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundurao.

Bengaluru Jul 29: There will be a centralised system in place in Karnataka to classify asymptomatic, symptomatic and mild symptomatic persons and recommend treatment based on the severity of the cases, said Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Tuesday here.

"Various existing apps related to COVID-19 will be brought under one platform to get real-time information which will assist in strategising allocation of hospitals/beds to the needy. This will probably remove the delay in bed allocation and treatment which is being faced now. The patients will get all information in one phone call," Dr Sudhakar said.

Sudhakar spoke with a team of experts from the government and Infosys.

Referring to a company by name Step 1, which is providing such services in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, the Minister said that a similar system will be implemented in the state as well.

"This company is having a team of doctors and nurses which is guiding the people whether they need hospital treatment or home isolation after they are tested positive for COVID-19. More than 70 per cent of the positive cases are being asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and are advised to go for home isolation," the minister said.

"The load on the hospitals is reduced and severe cases can be administered proper treatment. Infosys co-ordinates with the government to provide technical support for this system," Dr Sudhakar added.

Earlier during the day, the minister held a video conference with the heads of private medical colleges to review COVID preparedness.
The government has already passed guidelines to allocate 50 per cent of hospital beds for COVID patients.
