Energy dept EEs who switch off mobile phones to be suspended

Bengaluru, Jun 3: Executive engineers (EEs) working in the Energy Department will face suspension if they keep their official mobile phones switched off while on duty, Energy minister D K Shivakumar has said.

“There are complaints that the executive engineers working with escoms in the state are not properly responding to public grievances. There are also complaints that they are not available for communication when needed. The government has decided to suspend officers for switching off their official mobile phones while on duty,” the minister told reporters on Friday during his visit to Karnataka Vidyuth Karkhane Limited.

The decision has been taken to make the staff accountable and redress public grievances at the earliest. Accountability would be fixed on officers of all ranks, to redress grievances of the public.

“There are complaints that some executive engineers keep their phones switched off. The vigilance squad has been directed to keep an eye on such officials,” he said.

“Instructions have been given to all factories to manufacture only five-star transformers from July 1. The government has made it mandatory to use four-star transformers in rural areas and five star transformers in urban areas. About 25% of power can be saved by using the five-star transformers, while expenses may go up by just 5%,” the minister said.

Officials taken to task

Energy Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday is learnt to have pulled up Bescom officials for “failing to live up to the expectations of people” in attending to power related complaints during the recent rains in Bengaluru.

At a review meeting at his residence in Bengaluru, Shivakumar is said to have referred to the recent incident wherein there was a power cut at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office for 10 minutes when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was addressing a press conference along with AICC General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal.

“You people made me a laughing stock..... you are lowering my respect in the eyes of the people,” Shivakumar is said to have stated in his outburst.

He also sought details on the action taken by Bescom officials in various jurisdictions on attending to power-related complaints.

Govt to bear Rs 78 cr cost of 108-ft-tall Kempegowda statue outside Airport: DyCM

Bengaluru, Jun 27: Announcing Karnataka’s ambitious plan to install a 108-ft-tall statue of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda outside the airport, deputy chief minister Ashwath Narayan said the government will bear the project cost — approximately Rs 78 crore.

Work on the project will formally commence with the chief minister laying foundation stone for installation of the statue and development of a 23-acre park where it will come up, on Saturday.

KPCC president DK Shivakumar on Thursday suggested the cost be borne by Kempegowda International Airport and not the government. He wrote to the CM welcoming the decision to erect a statue of the chieftain at KIA, but asked why should the govenment spend on it. “When huge concessions have been provided to KIA, why not use its services to construct the statue,” he asked. Narayan, who is chairman of Kempegowda Development Authority, said it is the government’s duty to bear the cost.

The government has released sketches of the statue and a blueprint of the park. Noted sculptor Ram Sutar, who designed the Gandhi statue located between Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha and the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, will be part of this project as well.

Narayan said the government was not competing with any other state on having a tallest/largest statue while emphasising that Kempegowda ensured the city had tanks, markets and drainage system when it was founded. He added the government won’t invite many guests to Saturday’s ceremony. “Most legislators will be given a virtual link to view the event,” he said.

When the economic situation is very bad they are wasting people's money on these things now! These statues can be built when the peoples' basic things are first fulfilled. The title of this topic should be "People to bear the burden of Rs.78 crore", there is nothing like governments money, it's all belong to people.

What is the neccessity of spending tax payers money in building Statue when there is great need of these amount in improving the quality of Health sector during COVID-19 Pandemic. Government must be smart enough to prioritise the need of the people.

Bird flu: Migrated birds under close surveillance in Mysuru-Mandya region

Mysuru, Mar 18: Even though the migration season is coming to end and the winged visitors are set to fly back, the water bodies where most birds nest and breed are under close surveillance with the report about spread of bird flu in Mysuru as unusual death of birds can be a cause for worry and hence the authorities are on high alert.

At Karanji Lake, the birds are watched in detail twice – morning and evening. If any sick bird or dead bird is noticed, the Zoo Vets are alerted. So far, no such birds had been sighted. The surveillance data is maintained every day. Intensive surveillance and passive surveillance is done.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) Member Secretary B P Ravi said the birds are doing well and there is no cause for worry with their health monitored constantly along with tests on the bird droppings done every month at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.

Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium to be turned into covid care centre

Bengaluru, Jul 9: The M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium and the Bengaluru Palace in Karnataka will be converted into a COVID-19 care centre, informed the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Thursday.

The Bangalore International Exhibition Centre was also recently converted into a COVID-19 care facility by the state government amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

R Ashoka, the state's COVID management in charge said, "People of Bangalore need not panic. All necessary equipment and preparation are being arranged by the state. We have over 600 ambulances ready to take care of COVID patients."

As per the data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka now has a total of 28,877 COVID-19 cases, including 16,531 active cases and 11,876 recoveries.

470 people have died of the infectious virus in the state so far.
