Bengaluru, Feb 8: A teenage engineering student hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her home near Rajarajeshwari Nagar in southwest Bengaluru, on Tuesday afternoon after she was allegedly bullied and harassed by the classmates.

The victim is Meghana C, a first-semester civil engineering student at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Kumaraswamy Layout. She is survived by her banker-parents, Chandrashekar and Lata, and elder sister Bhavana, an engineer.

According to the police, Meghana left for college on Tuesday around 8.30 am and returned home while her parents were still at work. The incident came to light when Meghana's sister returned home from tuitions around 1 pm and found her sister's room locked from the inside. She peeped through the window and found Meghana hanging from a ceiling fan, the police said.

She informed her parents over the phone and with the help of a few neighbours broke open the door of her sister's room and brought Meghana down. But by then Meghana was dead. Meghana's parents said that their daughter was a victim of harassment in college. The harassment started in November last year.

Her classmates harassed her over a missing mobile phone, following which a professor admonished her and even counselled her, they said.

The parents also said that Meghana complained that she was treated as an outcast in the class when she contested the class representative elections. Her classmates stopped talking to her, did not share notes and even removed her from a WhatsApp group used by students to share notes, the parents said. Meghana's parents also said that they had even met her professors airing their daughter's concerns, but nothing changed.

While the Chandrashekars alleged that bullying by four classmates and a faculty member pushed Meghana to take the extreme step, the college said she was irregular to class and had flunked in a couple of subjects in the first semester. Police have booked the four students and faculty member for abetting Meghana's suicide.

very sad.  All students need to be respected.  Its unfortunate that she was harassed by her own classmates.  What a shame on these hate mongers?  What did they gain now?  Hope they are satisfied now and thumping their own back for the job well done.   Shit.   Students reasonable for the unnatural death of Meghana should be booked and jailed giving a lesson to other students.   College management is also responsible for this for taking the case easily.    I express my heartfelt condolences to close relatives of Meghana.   May God bless her.   I could not understand why are we losing such youne ones.    We should find some solution.  The only way for this is to respect others and their feelings.  Dont hate any one and dont take anyone for granted.  I ask the students to put themselves in the place of Meghana and think.   You have killed her.   You have taken her life.  God will not spare you unless you repent and beg for God's excuse and first of all ask for forgiveness from Meghana's parents and take oath not to do this with any one else throughout your life.   College Management should give instructions to all the students and make them cautious that anyone found  guilty will be debarred from college.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday opined that there is no other option left but to resort to 'Jail Bharo' agitation to expose the ruling BJP government's indulge in 'Corona Corruption' which runs into more than Rs 2000 crore.

Siddaramaiah said that according to a submission to the Karnataka High Court the government has submitted that it has incurred Rs 3,392 crore expenditure for Corona in the State so far. While the market price for equipment purchased will not exceed Rs 1163 crore and it clearly shows that the corruption is to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore.

Siddaramaiah speaking to a private TV channel here on Friday said the chief minister B S Yediyurappa-led State government should come out with a White Paper on the money spent for purchases made facilities provided to patients.

According to submission to the Court, the Government has purchased 1000 Ventilators by paying Rs 120 crore, while the market price is Rs 40 crores at Rs 4 lakh for each Ventilator. Why is Rs 120 crore more paid, does it not lead to doubt the government's claim. For purchase of kits, mask, gloves etc. it amounted to Rs 1,500 crores but paid by the government was Rs 9,000 crore."

Bengaluru, Feb 21: Amulya Leona, a college student, who raised to pro-Pakistan slogans to embarrass organisers of a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) here on Thursday evening, has been charged with sedition.

The student-activist, who was allowed to talk on stage, suddenly raised pro-Pakistan slogans. She was arrested by police after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi snatched her mike.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ramesh Bannoth confirmed the girl has been charged with sedition, provoking enmity between groups, and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.

It was just after Mr. Owaisi’s arrival on the stage at Freedom Park here that the 19-year-old student was asked to speak. After preliminary remarks, she suddenly shouted “Pakistan zindabad” thrice, leaving the crowd and organisers stunned.

Some of the organisers rushed to her and tried to take the mike away and stop her from speaking further. Mr. Owaisi too joined in and snatched the mike. Holding on to the mike, the girl then went on to shout “Hindustan zindabad” twice, before a posse of police personnel and organisers whisked her away from the stage

Soon after the student was taken away, a visibly upset Mr. Owaisi told the crowd: “Whatever has been spoken [by the girl] is wrong. Neither my party nor I has any connection with it. As long as we are alive, we will be raising Bharat zindabad slogans. Never had we any relationship with Pakistan nor will we have anything in future,” he announced.

He further stated: “This is condemnable. The organisers should not have invited such people to this place. If I had known that these kind of things would be said here, I would not have come here.”

It is unfortunate that the organisers have invited such people and a wrong message is going out, he said. “Now, BJP has got an opportunity and will blame me,” he added.

Every speaker, who took the podium after the incident, condemned the pro-Pakistan slogans raised by Amulya.

Janata Dal (S) councillor representing Gurappanapalya, Imran Pasha, one of the organisers of the protest under “Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isayi Federation”, claimed that they had not invited the “activist” and were not aware that she would be speaking from the stage. Mr. Pasha said that such statements were “a deliberate attempt to drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims”.

Meanwhile, the BJP State unit tweeted, “Truth is that protests against CAA are a joint venture between Pakistan and anti-National forces led by INC India.” In a press release, BJP State unit president Nalin Kumar Kateel termed this as an “anti-national act” and urged the police to take action.
