England selectors can take a leaf out of Dhoni's book

September 9, 2014

Sep 9: MS Dhoni won a game in the Caribbean on his own but the strategy was understandable as he had Ishant Sharma at the other end.

Dhonis bookAt Edgbaston, after hitting a six off the first ball, he should have backed Ambati Rayudu, who was in good form in the series and has won pressure games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. This allowed the bowler to bowl at just one batsman and not alter the line. Nonetheless, it was an exciting T20 game.

Although India won the one-day series, their Test performance requires introspection and the selectors need to take a hard look at a lot of things before they embark on the tough tour of Australia.

They have lost 13 Test matches in the last five overseas tours since 2011, and that is not acceptable from a top cricket-playing nation.

For me, Ajinkya Rahane has been the best player for India in the last two months. He is a quiet, old-fashioned cricketer, different from today's generation, which is flamboyant and expressive.

Virat Kohli struggled throughout the series and will be disappointed with his form. He is a class act and this would be a blip in his career. What is important is that he should learn from this tour and come back a better player. His weakness outside the off-stump would have been noticed by all in world cricket and he has to be a lot tighter there in the future.

India's bowling did well in patches. They are a young and inexperienced side and will need guidance to get better. Mohd Shami bowled superbly in the one-dayers, especially in the death overs, but he has to mould himself into a Test bowler as well.

He has the talent to do well in the longer format and shoulder the responsibility in overseas conditions. What he needs to work on is his fitness and ability to run in for 20 overs in a day. His run-up in limited-overs cricket was a lot aggressive but he must work towards becoming a good Test bowler because that's what people will remember in the long run.

England would be happy to finish the series with a win, and it was a much-improved performance since the start of the one-day series. They were outplayed in the first three games but showed lot of character to come back in the last two matches. They are a young one-day side and still trying to find a combination to take them forward.

The likes of Alex Hales, Joe Root, Jos Buttler will go on to become good shorter format players if persisted with and the England selectors should take a leaf out of Dhoni's book and in the way he has persisted with Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja.

They must remember that there is no substitute for experience and with time Root & Co will learn how to play one-day cricket, pace their innings well and take the team to better positions.

Mumbai, Apr 27: The pressure to replace iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps was "immense" due to high expectations from fans says K L Rahul, who has been doing the wicket-keeping duty for India in the limited overs format for some time now.

Dhoni quit Test cricket in 2014 and has not played for India in the limited overs format since last year's ODI World Cup in England.

Rahul kept the wickets in the limited overs series against Australia in January this year and also during the team's tour to New Zealand.

"I was nervous when I was doing it for India because of the crowd pressure. If you fumble, people feel that you cannot replace MS Dhoni. The pressure of replacing a legendary wicket-keeper like MSD was immense as it involved people accepting someone else behind the stumps," Rahul told Star Sports on its show 'Cricket Connected'.

Rahul, who has played 32 ODIs and 42 T20Is, said keeping the wickets is not alien to him since he dons the gloves during the Indian Premier League (IPL) and also when he plays for his Ranji side Karnataka.

"People who follow cricket know that I haven't been away from wicket-keeping for too long as I donned the gloves in the IPL and every time I played for Karnataka," the 28-year-old said.

"I am always in touch with wicket-keeping but am also somebody who is more than willing to take up the role if the team needs me to," he stressed.

Dhoni's career is a matter of intense speculation. Many former players feel that it won't be easy for Dhoni to make it to the national squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Australia.

Potchefstroom, Feb 10: India's under-19 cricket team manager Anil Patel says the ICC has taken a serious view of the aggressive celebrations by Bangladesh players after their World Cup triumph and will be reviewing the footage of the final game's "last few minutes".

Some Bangladeshi players got carried away while celebrating their historic three-wicket win over India in the final on Sunday. While their captain Akbar Ali apologised for the "unfortunate incident", his Indian counterpart Priyam Garg said their reaction was "dirty".

"We don't know what actually happened," Patel told 'ESPNCricinfo' on Sunday.

"Everybody was in a shock, absolutely, but we don't know what happened exactly. The ICC officials are going to watch the footage of the last few minutes and they are going to let us know," he said.

Even when the match was on, the Bangladesh players were overly aggressive while fielding and their lead pacer Shoriful Islam sledged the Indian batsmen after every delivery.

As soon as the match ended, it became tense with Bangladeshi players rushing to the ground and displaying aggressive body language. The two teams nearly came to blows before the situation was defused by the coaching staff and on-field officials.

Patel claimed that match referee Graeme Labrooy met him and expressed regret at what transpired on the field.

"The referee came to me. He was sorry about the incident. He clarified the ICC is going to take very seriously what has happened during the match and the last session. They are going to witness the footage and they will tell us in the morning (Monday)."

London, Apr 25: Former Australian cricketer Graeme Watson who was fighting cancer, has died at the age of 75.

Primarily a middle-order batsman and a medium-pace bowler, he featured in five Tests from 1967 to 1972 and two ODIs in 1972, ESPNcricinfo reported.

The all-rounder earned the national call during the 1966-67 tour of Rhodesia and South Africa. Watson slammed a half-century in the first innings of the second Test of the series.

However, the medium-pace bowler was ruled of the next test after suffering an ankle injury. He returned for the fourth Test in Johannesburg where scalped his career-best 2 for 67 but failed to leave a mark with the bat as Kangaroos lost the series.

In 1971-72 he moved to Western Australia and played a major role in their Sheffield-Shield win in 1971-72, 1972-73, and 1974-75 seasons.
