Mangaluru, Sept 29: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai has written to the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju to ensure safety of aircrafts and passengers at the Mangaluru International Airport.
The minister’s action comes following recent incidents of AAI declaring an emergency to accommodate an Air India Express flight, with 173 passengers bound for Dubai, returning with an engine failure and another aircraft, with 185 passengers, skidding while landing.
Such incidents have been a cause for concern for people transiting through the airport, Mr Rai said adding that the Union Minister should take steps to enhance security and safety measures at the airport.
It could be recalled here that an Air India Express flight from Dubai had overshot the table-top runway at the Mangaluru Airport and plunged over a cliff into a wooded valley, killing 158 persons in 2010.
