Madras Cafe will turn tables for John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri: Shoojit Sircar

August 22, 2013

Madras_CafeMumbai, Aug 22: Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar feels that his upcoming film Madras Cafe, based on the Sri Lankan civil war, will change people's perception about its lead actors – John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri - as he has extracted their best performance.

After being in the industry for close to ten years and being part of hit films like Dhoom, Dostana, Housefull 2, Race 2 and Shootout at Wadala among others, John has often been written off.

Nargis who made her debut in Bollywood with Rockstar was criticised for her dead pan expressions and failed to capitalise on the film's success.

But Shoojit feels that after Madras Cafe hits cinema houses this Friday, things are going to change.

"Every person has acting ability it depends how you use it. My film Vicky Donor was purely about actor and characters. I don't leave any actor. I suck their blood and I make them act. I don't know how I do it but I manage. After this film whatever critical approach one has for John and Nargis it will change. That I can assure you in written format," Shoojit said.

John was always on Shoojit's mind for this political thriller but he did not think of Nargis at least initially.

"Since beginning only John was there in the film. Nargis was never on my mind but I knew Nargis much before 'Rockstar'. I introduced her to the film industry because I did one commercial with her. Then Imtiaz picked her up. Though he received lot of criticism," the director said.

Shoojit calls this film as a re-launch for Nargis. He is confident that people will like her in the film and that she will be absolutely a new find.

With Vicky Donor which was a commercial entertainer Shoojit attained box office success but he insists that he has not compromised on Madras Cafe.

"I have said to the marketing people don't do anything which will take away the seriousness of the subject. We are talking about people who are suffering or have suffered. So we should not take undue advantage of the film to make a gimmick of it. The film is a thriller not a documentary," he added.

Shoojit says he has no expectations from this film.

"Even if (people) they don't like it... it is okay. I am not bothered because if I get bothered I can't make films. I have to make many films... I have lot of story ideas. I have honestly made this film and I believe there is an audience to appreciate my honest effort," he added.

His previous film Vicky Donor was a light hearted one but Madras Cafe is not.

"This is a difficult script and a difficult subject for me. It took a long time to prepare the script because we were not satisfied with the script. The film is completely researched by me and my team," he said.

"Earlier we were concerned that John is there so people should not mistake it as a romantic film. But now the trailer is out and people know it's a serious film," he added.

Shoojit insists the film portrays RAW agents in a realistic manner and they won't be jumping off bikes or doing high-octane stunts.

With this film, people will come to know how real RAW agents work.

Kochi, Jan 6: A trial court on Monday framed charges against Malayalam film actor Dileep and other accused in the case of alleged abduction and molestation of a south Indian actress in 2017.

The actor and nine other accused were present in the additional special sessions court in Ernakulamwhen the charges were framed against them.

All of them have denied the charges.

On Saturday, the Court had dismissed a plea filed by Dileep, seeking to exclude him from the list of accused.

The Court had admitted the prosecution argument that there is prima facie evidence against him in the crime and dismissed the plea of the actor, who is eighth accused in the case.

The court had also not allowed a plea by the actor to grant him 10 days time to file the appeal in a higher court in the light of the Supreme Court order in November 2019 that the trial should be completed in six months.

The court is hearing the case in-camera.

On December 19, Dileep, along with his lawyers and a technical expert, had examined the contents of the electronic records at the closed room of the court.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed that the actor be allowed to inspect the records to enable him to present an effective defence during the trial.

In February 2017, the actress was allegedly abducted and molested by the accused.

Seven people, including the key accused 'Pulsar' Suni were arrested in connection with the actress' abduction case.

There are 10 accused in the case.

The entire act had allegedly taken place in a moving vehicle, which was filmed by the accused to blackmail her.

Dileep was subsequently arrested and arrayed as an accused in connection with offences under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act.

The top court had directed that the trial in case be concluded expeditiously, preferably within six months from the date of the judgement.

A woman judge is hearing the case.

In February 2019, the High Court, while considering a plea seeking to transfer the case to a Sessions Court headed by a woman judge to conduct the trial, had ordered the CBI special court Judge-III Ernakulam Honey M Varghese to complete the trial expeditiously.

Washington, Jan 11: Fresh off his win at the Golden Globes, actor Joaquin Phoenix participated in a climate change protest and was arrested by the police.

The "Joker" star took part in the weekly protests against climate change, started by Hollywood veteran Jane Fonda.

According to Variety, the 45-year-old actor also addressed the crowd of close to 300 people.

In his short speech, he took aim at the meat and dairy industry for being the third leading cause of the climate crisis.

"Sometimes we wonder what can we do in this fight against climate change, and there is something that you can do today and tomorrow, by making a choice about what you consume," Phoenix said.

"There are things I can't avoid. I flew a plane here today, or last night rather, but one thing I can do is change my eating habits," he added.

Besides Phoenix, veteran Hollywood star Martin Sheen also turned up for the protest and got arrested by the police. Actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Susan Sarandon were also present.

Capitol Police said it arrested 147 people who were charged with crowding, obstructing or incommoding. All the protestors were later released.

Fonda, who was on stage with Phoenix, called him "one of the greatest living actors today".

She has been protesting weekly as part of her "Fire Drill Fridays" initiative since announcing she was moving to Washington "to be closer to the epicenter of the fight for our climate." Her participation has ended in multiple arrests.

Earlier this month, Phoenix had talked about climate change at the Golden Globes ceremony, asking Hollywood to walk the talk on the issue.

Mar 11: The shooting of Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai has been completed, and the film will now release on schedule.

If one recalls, the film went on the floors in the first week of November 2019 and was supposed to be Salman’s fastest completed film. However, the movie faced a variety of roadblocks — It was first to be wrapped in the first week of February, “But Salman went off to his Panvel farmhouse after the release of Dabangg 3 and spent a while there ushering in his birthday,” a source reveals.

“Then, the extension of the show Bigg Boss 13 by five weeks also turned out to be another speed breaker. Then, Salman wanted to make sure that the film was being made as good as what his audiences wanted on Eid. He made sure that his director Prabhudeva got what he wanted from the performers and didn’t want to rush him.

"Additionally, the Azerbaijan schedule of the film also got cancelled as Salman did not want to take any chances with the cast and crew with the lurking Covid 19, and rescheduled the shoot in India. This is now complete, barring any patchwork that might emerge later,” our source adds.

Radhe is slated to be an Eid release, which will clash with Akshay Kumar’s Laxmmi Bomb.
