Entire coastal Karnataka to be declared open defecation-free on Oct 2

Mangaluru, Sept 24: As many as 10 districts of Karnataka including coastal districts of Dakshina kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada will be formally declared defecation-free on October 2.

The other seven districts are Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkamagaluru, Gadag, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Mandya.

According to S G Nanjayyanamath, chairman of Karnataka State Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Committee, these districts have achieved credit of being open defecation-free districts in the State. Work is on to declare the remaining districts too.

Speaking to media persons Mr. Nanjayyanamath claimed that 1,836 gram panchayats in the State have been declared open-defecation free, and on Gandhi Jayanti, 8,482 more would be added to the list. He said preparation was on to declare at least 2 or 3 more districts open defecation-free on November 1 (Karnataka Rajyotsava Day).

With regard to setting up potable water supplying units, he said 8,400 such units have been set up across the State. The process would be completed by calling tender for installing 2,500 more units. He said 1,000 additional such units would be granted to localities dominated by Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes communities. The works of these units was under way and would be completed soon, he said.

Mr. Nanjayyanamath said Rs. 54 crore had been spent from the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department for drinking water, development of roads in rural areas, and shed for cattle.

Mangaluru, Jun 17: The first chartered flight repatriating Indians stranded at Kuwait for months landed at the international airport here.

The Jazeera Airways flight privately booked by the Keralites and coastal Kannadigas living in the Arab country had left sometime in the afternoon with 160 passengers on board.

The flight also carried the mortal remains of Sathish Kochu Shetty (45), who died in a fire tragedy at a refinery in Kuwait on June 14.

Udupi/Mangaluru, Mar 1: A total of twenty leaplings were born in the hospitals of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada (DK) districts on Saturday, February 29, district health department said on Sunday.

According to the district health department, sixteen babies were born in DK district while Udupi district saw four births. More boys than girls were born in DK (12–4) and it was the inverse in Udupi district (3–1).

Bengaluru, Jun 8: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday fielded Eranna Kadadi and Ashok Gasti as it's candidates for the June 19 Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka, ignoring the recommendations of the state BJP unit.

The state unit had recommended the names of Prabhakar Kore, Ramesh Katti and Prakash Shetty.

The names of the two candidates were announced in a party statement in Delhi.

The election is scheduled on June 19 to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, represented by Rajeev Gowda and BK Hariprasad of Congress, Prabhakar Kore of BJP and D Kupendra Reddy of JD(S) that will fall vacant on June 25, with their retirement.

June 9 is the last date for filing nominations. Party sources said both Kadadi and Gasti come from an RSS background.

Kadadi hails from Belagavi, while Gasti is a resident of Raichur.

The 54-year-old Eranna Kadadi started his active political career in 1989 and unsuccessfully contested the assembly election from Arambhavi constituency in 1994 on a BJP ticket.

He had also served as the Belagavi district Panchayat president in 2010.

Ashok Gasti is a lawyer by profession and former general secretary of the BJP's OBC Cell.

He is the former chairperson of the Backward Class Development Corporation.
