Euro 2016: Battling teammates and 'ugly' wins keep Ronaldo in hunt

July 5, 2016

Lyon, Jul 5: Think Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo immediately springs to mind, but the names of Nani, Renato Sanches , Ricardo Quaresmo and Rui Patricio have been saviours of a lucky and lacklustre advance to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

Portugal have not won any of their five games so far in the 90 minutes of regulation time. Poland, their quarter-final victims, went out despite not losing a game in regulation time at the tournament.

Ronaldo, who has still scored twice despite a jaded Euro so far, would not be leading his side out against Wales in Lyon on Wednesday were it not for his teammates' heroics.

Former Manchester United winger Nani has been transformed into an outright frontman and scored twice and provided an assist.

Goalkeeper Rui Patricio brilliantly saved Jakub Blaszczykowski's shootout penalty to set up Portugal's victory over Poland after 18-year-old Sanches got his first international goal to level the game during regulation time.

Quaresmo, once an unruly character on the pitch who had been Ronaldo's fierce rival on the pitch, calmly scored the penalty that secured victory.

He also headed the goal that got an extra-time win over Croatia in the last 16.

"At certain times of the game, everyone has to assume their role as leaders," said coach Fernando Santos after the Poland win.

Santos has himself been praised for the way he has forged a united team that has battled its way through against adversity.

Santos was previously coach of Greece who knew what it was like to fight their way to the final in 2004 and beat Portugal on home ground.

Portugal have taken a bizarre route to the Lyon clash against Gareth Bale's Wales.

They let Iceland fight back from a goal down to get a 1-1 draw in their first group. They fired 23 shots at Austria but only got a goalless draw in their second game. Portugal three times came back from a goal down -- with Ronaldo getting two -- to equalise in the 3-3 draw with Hungary.

"This defeat hurts," said Poland's coach Adam Nawalka after seeing his side go out to the Portuguese in the last eight.

"Portugal has been very criticised for the not very sparkling football it has played -- and it is true it has not been as seductive as it was even a short time ago," former Portugal goalkeeper Vitor Baia wrote in Record daily on Monday.

"But it has been efficient and we should be proud because now we see a team. We can even see Ronaldo becoming dependent on the others and not the other way," he added.

Santos "deserves my respect forever," was the response of Quaresma who has a tear tattooed on his cheek, normally the sign of someone who has killed a man.

Santos "is one of the few (coaches) to give me the confidence I needed," added the 32-year-old, now with Besiktas in Turkey.

The coach is lucky that even when Ronaldo is misfiring he has Nani, Quaresma, teen sensation Sanches and the likes of Real Madrid defender Pepe to count on.

It may not be beautiful in the way Ronaldo would like, but Santos knows that winning is what counts.

After the Poland win, Ronaldo addressed several hundred Portugal fans who went to see the team train at their base near Paris.

"We appreciate your support but we haven't won anything yet," the captain said.

Wales should be warned that Santos has been saying since the first day of the tournament that he expects to be at the final on July 10 in Paris.

"Would I like us to be pretty? Yes," said Santos after the quarter-final win. "But in between being pretty and being at home, or ugly and being here, I prefer to be ugly."

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Indian men's hockey team defender Harmanpreet Singh is delighted and honoured to be nominated for the Arjuna Award by Hockey India.

The Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal has been nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award while her compatriots Vandana Katariya, Monika and Harmanpreet Singh have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

"I was extremely delighted to hear the news. It's an honour to be nominated for the Arjuna Award and I am sure the nomination will motivate me to perform even better in the upcoming years. All of us have received tremendous support from Hockey India over the years and I was extremely happy to know that Rani has been nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Vandana Katariya and Monika have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. They have put up some brilliant performances in the recent past and I would like to extend my congratulations to them," Harmanpreet said.

The 24-year-old dragflick sensation stepped up his role in the team and shouldered the responsibility of vice-captain with aplomb. As a defender-dragflicker, he was instrumental in the team's winning performance in the FIH Series Finals in Odisha. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Test Event, he captained the team to victory in the absence of Manpreet Singh who was rested for the tournament.

Harmanpreet was also part of the Indian team that won the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers against Russia last year. Harmanpreet said that he has been able to perform for the team only because of the support he has received from his teammates.

"I am very happy with the way I have been contributing to the team in the last couple of years. However, I have been able to come up with the goods only because of the way my teammates have supported me. Hockey is a team sport and all of us ensure that we are contributing to the team's cause in some way or the other. If we score a goal, then it's not only the goal scorer, who takes the credit, but the entire team is credited for a particular effort," said the defender.

Harmanpreet added that booking a place in the Tokyo Olympic Games was the biggest achievement for the team in 2019.

"It was simply amazing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in front of our home crowd last year. I will cherish the memory forever. The balance of our side was fantastic and everyone chipped in to make the tournament a memorable one. Now, we will give everything we can to come up with great results at the Olympics next year. It's our sole target at the moment and all of us are up for the challenge. Hopefully, we will become a much better side once we play our first match in Tokyo," he said.

New Delhi, Feb 5: IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has denied any financial dealings with the controversial Rose Valley Group except for it being a sponsor of the side's official jerseys in 2012 and 2013.

KKR issued the clarification after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached Rose Valley's assets worth over Rs 70 crore on Monday. The attached assets include Rs 11.87 crore bank deposits of Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd, that owns KKR, in connection with a money laundering probe.

The franchise said it hopes for the matter to be resolved expeditiously.

"Rose Valley Hotels was one of KKR's IPL jersey sponsors for IPL seasons 2012 and 2013. Rose Valley had paid KKR an approx. amount of Rs 11.87 crore as sponsorship fees," KKR CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement.

"KKR had no other dealings with the Rose Valley Group including Rose Valley’s micro finance business," he added.

The statement added that in July last year, KRSPL (Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd), received a "witness summon" from the ED in connection with an investigation relating to the Rose Valley Group, particularly its micro finance business.

"The ED continues the investigation of Rose Valley. KKR continues to cooperate with the authorities in all respects," Mysore said.

"As part of the investigative process, sometime in October 2019, the ED placed a lien on the said amount earlier paid by Rose Valley to KKR," he asserted.

The directors of KRSPL include Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan, actor Juhi Chawla's husband Jay Mehta, Mysore and two others.

Mysore was questioned in this case by ED's Kolkata office in October last year.

Apart from KRSPL, the ED attached properties of two other entities -- Multiple Resorts Pvt. Ltd. and Kolkata's St Xavier's College on Monday.

The ED registered an FIR against the Rose Valley group, its chairman Gautam Kundu and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in 2014.

Kundu was arrested by the agency in Kolkata in 2015 and is in judicial custody at present.

The ED has filed multiple charge sheets in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar courts in this connection and total attachments are now worth Rs 4,750 crore.

The group has been charged by the ED and the CBI with "illegally and fraudulently collecting deposits from public with the intention to cheat them by falsely promising high returns on their investment", thereby perpetrating a ponzi-like fraud.
