EVMs to have candidates' photos

Bengaluru, Jan 23: In a move that could go a long way in preventing bogus candidates from playing mischief, the Election Commission of India (ECI) will use photographs of candidates on the electronic voting machines (EVM) during the upcoming Assembly elections.

It will be the first Legislative Assembly polls in Karnataka where this will be implemented.

Besides helping voters recognise their candidate from among those with similar names, the move will also help raise voter confidence amid concerns aired by the ruling Congress that the EVMs are prone to tampering.

Each EVM will have the names of candidates, their black-and-white photographs and the symbol of the party they represent. Each photograph will be 2.5 cm in size.

"Photographs of candidates were used on the EVMs in the recent Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh polls. Photographs will be used in the upcoming bypolls in Rajasthan. In fact, we had candidates' photographs for the Nanjangud and Gundlupet bypolls last year," Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar said.

Candidates' names will be classified under three categories. "Names will be listed alphabetically starting with those from national parties, followed by those from regional parties and then the independents or other parties," he said.

Use of photographs coupled with alphabetical listing of candidate names will further negate claims that EVMs can be tampered with. "For an EVM to be rigged so as to favour a particular candidate, how will anyone know whose name is listed where?" Kumar asked.

The 2018 Assembly election will see the introduction of voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines, which will allow voters to verify the votes they have cast. The Election Commission will also tally votes cast on the EVM with the VVPAT printouts in one polling booth selected randomly under each Assembly constituency.

Kochi, Apr 18: The Centre on Friday informed the Kerala High Court that there was no immediate plan to bring back the Indian citizens stranded in the Gulf countries due to the novel coronavirus outbreak and that the expatriates had been granted visa extension.

The counsel for the central government made the submission before a division bench comprising justices Rajavijayaraghavan and T R Ravi during the hearing of a plea seeking a direction to bring back Indians stranded in the UAE.

Permission of the Gulf countries was required to send medical teams there to carry out medical examination of the stranded Indians, the counsel said when the court sought to know the Centre's view on Kerala government sending medical teams to the Gulf countries to deal with the issue of COVID-19 disease among Malayalees there.

The court posted the plea for April 21 for consideration after the Central government informed that a similar petition is under consideration of the Supreme Court.

In its plea, Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) in Dubai, the organisation for non-resident Indians from Kerala, sought directions to the Ministries of External Affairs and Civil Aviation to provide exemptions in the international air travel ban to bring back Indians stranded in the UAE.

The petitioners noted that those who return could be kept in quarantine as per the protocol of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.
