Ex-AAP candidate backs Prakash Rai, says activists, farmers are with him

Bengaluru, Mar 10: Several progressive thinkers and social activists have decided to support actor-turned-politician Prakash Rai, who is set to contest from Bengaluru Central constituency as an Independent candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Babu Mathew, who had contested from Bengaluru North in the 2014 polls on Aam Aadmi Party ticket and is now part of ‘Save the Constitution’ movement in the State, told reporters on Saturday that it was time to send “independent-thinking people” to Parliament for speaking up for citizens there.

Candidates elected through the party system have to abide by the party whip and this can be counter-productive on occasions, said Mr. Mathew. He also appealed to Mr. Raj to limit his poll expenditure within the provisions of the Election Commission and set a standard for others.

He said writers, intellectuals, farmers’ organisations and Swaraj India leaders said farmers and activists in large numbers would campaign for the actor.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: The Director-General of Police (DGP), Praveen Sood said on Wednesday that grocery stores and supermarkets can stay open for 24 hours across the state for people’s convenience.
Sood’s statement came on Wednesday following panic among people after the government’s announcement of a 21-day long nationwide lockdown starting on March 24.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: With 12 fresh cases of the COVID-19 infection, including one woman, the total number of novel coronavirus cases in Karnataka surged to 371 on Saturday.

The sources said that as many as three new positive cases were reported from Mysuru district, followed by two each from Kalaburagi, Bhagalkote, one each case from Vijayapura, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag and Mandya, districts on Saturday.

Mangaluru, May 31: A yellow alert has been sounded in eight districts of Karnataka, amidst the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction that the low pressure area formed over Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep may to intensify further into a cyclonic storm.

The yellow has been sounded in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga and Chamarajanagara till June 1.

Moderate to heavy rain is expected to lash parts of coastal Karnataka today and tomorrow. 

The IMD has assessed that the situation is favourable for the onset of southwest monsoon. In view of the enhanced cloud cover and the deepening of southwesterly winds up to mid tropospheric levels, the southwest monsoon advanced further.

The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid fishing in west coast of India from May 31 to June 4.
