Ex-Cong leader drags deity into ‘abuse row’; invites Rai for ‘truth test’

Mangaluru, Jun 4: A day after district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai brushed aside the “shocking” allegations made against him by former Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal, the latter on Tuesday threw the gauntlet to the former inviting him for a truth test at Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala.

“Let Mr Rai come Dharmasthala and swear on deity, Sri Manjunatha Swami, that he hasn’t abused senior Congress veteran B Janardhana Poojary,” Mr Bantwal challenged at a press meet. “Manjunatha Swami is our ‘court’. If Mr Rai has really not said anything he will definitely come to Dharmasthala. If he does not turn up within a week, we should realize that he abused for sure,” he added.

“Mr Rai could have just apologized to Mr Poojary and end the issue there. Instead, he took six days to persuade Congress leaders Arun Coelho and Tejaswi Raj. When that did not work, Rai told the media that the whole incident did not happen and he was being falsely accused,” said the Billava leader.

He went on to claim that Mr Rai can be booked under Section 506 of the IPC. “But we do not believe in playing dirty politics and hence do not want to go ahead and file a complaint,” he said.

Mr Bantwal played an audio clipping in front of media persons and claimed that it was Arun Coelho speaking. “I am ready to tell this truth in front of anybody you want me to,” said the male voice in the clip.

He further said: “The minister does not respect Mr Poojary. If he did, he would at least make a call and invite him for yesterday’s program in the Congress Office. His claims of lobbying for Mr Poojary in Delhi during last Lok Sabha polls are also false as the candidate was finalized through internal polls in Managluru. Sonia Gandhi doesn’t even know this Rai personally.”

Mr Bantwal lamented that in the last four years, neither Chief Minister Siddharamaiah nor local Congress stalwarts like U T Khader and Mr Rai asked for Mr Poojary’s opinion before nominating for party posts.

He claimed that he met Mr Khader in Fr Muller’s Hall after the latter called for a press meet in the city on Sunday. He said that when he discussed the issue, Mr Khader said that he had his own issues to deal with. He added that he feels Mr Khader’s ‘issues’ could be nothing other than his political position and gains.

“I am not part of any party. So I cannot politically benefit out of any of this. The incident of Mr Rai abusing Mr Poojary in the wedding happened near the entrance of the hall and not on the main stage. That is why not many people know about it,” he said.

Domestic flight operations resumed in the country today after a gap of two months. All flight operations had ceased when the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March.

Bengaluru, June 23: A senior IAS officer allegedly, who had faced arrest in connection with I Monetary Advice (IMA) scam, today allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in the city.

The deceased is BM Vijay Shankar. He had been arrested by special investigation team (SIT) in the I Monetary Advice (IMA) case when he was deputy commissioner (DC) Urban Bengaluru.

He had spent few days in the jail over his alleged involvement in the IMA scam and was released on bail. The IMA case is currently being probed by Central Bureau of Investigation.

Shankar was staying in Jayanagar near Ashoka Pillar along with his family members.

Shankar was accused of taking Rs 1.5 crore to approve a report on financial irregularities, and was accused of giving a clean chit to the main accused of IMA scam, Mohammed Mansoor Khan.

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.
