Ex-Prez Pranab Mukherjee raises concerns over protectionism

Bengaluru, Nov 28: Former President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday raised serious concerns over growing protectionism which is affecting the outcome of world trade.

"I am the signatory to the WTO document and agreement on behalf of India. All of us pledged to create a free market and gradual dismantling of protectionism. Unfortunately, growing protectionism is seriously affecting the outcome of world trade," he said here.

Mukherjee, who is also a veteran Congress leader, said this while addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of St Joseph's Institute of Management here.

He also said he was the signatory to WTO document and agreement on behalf of India.

Mukherjee said any country cannot create artificial barriers through protectionism in the days of global villages.

The former President urged students and faculty of St Joseph's Institute of Management to come out with suitable answers to meet the great challenge of protectionism of this generation.

India also needs answers as to where its business should invest its energy and its resources, he said.

"We also need syllabus that match the needs of the socio-economic environment for its transformation," he added.

Mukherjee also urged people to build a conducive atmosphere to achieve socio-economic transformation as ingrained in the Indian Constitution, which is a great Magna Carta.

New Delhi, Feb 13: The BJP's Amit Shah today said statements like "goli maaro" and "Indo-Pak match" should not have been made by BJP leaders ahead of the Delhi elections.

The BJP may have suffered in the elections because of hate statements made by party leaders, he said, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

The party, he said, had distanced itself from such remarks.

Riyadh, Apr 27: The government of Saudi Arabia has signed a SR995 million (approx. Dh972m) contract with China to provide Covid-19 tests for nine million people in the Kingdom.

The Saudi Press Agency, SPA, reported that the decision came "as a result of a phone call made today (Sunday) between the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Chinese President Xi Jinping."

The contract includes providing necessary equipment and supplies, making available of 500 Chinese specialists and technicians who are specialised in performing tests, establishing six large regional laboratories throughout the Kingdom; including a mobile laboratory with a capacity of performing 10,000 tests per day. Saudi cadres will also be trained to conduct daily tests and comprehensive field tests, under the new agreement

The contract was co-signed by the National Unified Procurement Company and Chinese company Huo-yan Laboratories by Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court, on behalf of the Government of Saudi Arabia, and Chinese Ambassador to the Kingdom Chen Weiqing, as a representative of the Chinese Government.

The contract is one of the largest contracts that will provide diagnostic tests for the novel Coronavirus.

Tests were also purchased from several other companies from the United States, Switzerland and South Korea, bringing the number of available tests to 14.5 million, covering around 40 percent of Saudi Arabia's population, SPA added.

New Delhi, May 28: With 6,566 more coronavirus cases and 194 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally reached 1,58,333 on Thursday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Affairs.

The number of active coronavirus cases stands at 86,110, while 67,692 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said. The death toll due to the infection has reached 4,531 in the country.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state with 56,948 cases. Tamil Nadu has recorded as many as 18,545 cases while Gujarat and Delhi have recorded 15,195 and 15,257 coronavirus cases respectively.
