Ex-prison officials get 5 yrs in jail for treating Telgi like a VIP

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Two former prison officials have been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000 each for helping Abdul Karim Telgi run the multi-crore stamp paper scam behind bars.

The High Court of Karnataka has convicted Superintendent P N Jayasimha and Assistant Superintendent Nanjappa for helping Telgi in the Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara in 2001-2002. The former officials have already served three years in jail.

A division bench of Justices Ravi Malimath and John Michael Cunha convicted them on an appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). CBI counsel P Prasanna Kumar argued that the former officials had provided Telgi with first-class prisoner facilities though he was just an undertrial. He was given a separate room, and two undertrials were assigned as his assistants. He was also allowed a wooden door and curtains on his windows. What’s more, Telgi was allowed to use several mobile phones and meet his co-accused in the prison officials’ chambers without any entry being made in the visitors register. All these were clear violations of the prison manual, Kumar asserted.

Mangaluru, July 31: Extending Eid al-Adha greetings to the people, S M Rashid Haji, president of the Bearys chamber of commerce & industry has termed the festival as a symbol of sacrifice and patience. 

“Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibraheem’s (a) test of faith and sacrifices. It symbolizes sacrifice and endurance,” he said.

“Every human being during his lifetime faces one or the other test from the Almighty… Now we are collectively facing the hardship... May this festival bring goodness and peace, and herald the end of pandemic,” he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 24: Underlining the seriousness of the coronavirus, which is spreading like wildfire in Karnataka, renowned Heart Surgeon and founder of Narayana Hrudayalaya Dr Devi Shetty on Tuesday predicted that Karnataka alone will have more than 80,000 people affected with the dreaded killer disease COVID-19 if people fail to protect themselves.

He urged the people to cooperate with the Government in preventing its further spread and immediately treat those who are affected.

Dr Shetty, urging the people to remain indoors and not to venture out, said those who are affected should not come out and remain in isolation even in their houses and take all precautions advised by doctors.

He said if 80,000 people in the state were affected, more than 20,000 need to be admitted to Hospital for treatment.

"More than 2000 affected need to be kept under ventilation and it requires more infrastructure in the hospitals," he said.

Mangaluru, Jul 29: Ahead of popular Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan, Karnataka postal circle has introduced an online portal 'Rakhi Post' to deliver rakhis across the country amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

This year Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Monday, August 3.

This service can be used to send rakhis to people across the country without violating the coronavirus norms.

Speaking to news agency, Senior Superintendent of Post offices, Shriharsha N said, "I am happy to announce that Karnataka postal circle has introduced an online portal 'rakhi post' to deliver rakhis to people during coronavirus phase."

"People willing to avail this service can visit this portal and pay a nominal amount of Rs 100 to send a rakhi," Shriharsha said.

The official has suggested to avail the service before July 31 for the timely delivery of rakhis.

The portal is also offering a special service to send rakhis to the soldier deployed on the borders. "We have also introduced a unique feature to deliver rakhis to Indian soldiers on the borders," he added.
