Expect Man United to win the Champions League by 2017: Van Gaal

October 1, 2015

Manchester, Oct 1: Manager Louis van Gaal has said Manchester United have a "realistic" chance of winning the Champions League and the Premier League by the time his contract expires in 2017.

Van Gaal has won league titles with every club he has managed and also lifted the Champions League with Dutch club Ajax in 1995 and finished runner-up with Bayern Munich in 2010.

"It is realistic to expect us to win the Premier League and the Champions League (before my contract expires). Because I did it everywhere," Van Gaal told reporters ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash against VfL Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.

United sit on top of the Premier League table after seven games, but have made a poor start to their Champions League campaign, having lost 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven in their first match.

"We have improved when we have to compare us with the team of last year, but we need still time," the former Netherlands manager said.

"We have to improve to win the Premier League or a tournament like the Champions League."

Van Gaal said he was still planning to leave after his contract expires in 2017, reluctant to break a promise to his wife that he would retire as planned.

"Normally I shall leave after next year but what is normal in our football world? You never know so I cannot answer that question," Van Gaal said.

"But I promised my wife to go with her to our paradise (villa in Portugal) so it shall be very hard for me to deny that promise.

"Next year I am 65 and say I stay a year longer, it shall be very hard to my wife," he added.

Islamabad, Jun 13: Pakistan cricket team’s former captain Shahid Afridi, who has tested positive for coronavirus,  appears to have contracted the virus during his recent visit to Muzaffarabad city of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) where Pakistan has been sending its corona positive patients.

The former Pakistan cricketer was seen attending gatherings in Muzaffarabad last month without wearing a mask and not maintaining social distancing. He spewed venom against India during his rallies.

Afridi visited PoK to also express his solidarity with the people there who have been left to fend for themselves in combating COVID-19 as Pakistan has refused to provide any COVID fighting equipment like PPE kits and ventilators to the area’s handful of hospitals.

In fact, Pakistan has been using the PoK as a “dumping ground” for COVID-19 affected persons from all across the country as authorities want to keep Punjab province free of corona positive persons.

The locals held massive protests against Pakistan for setting up quarantine centres and shifting patients from parts of Pakistan to PoK.

People are immensely suffering in Pakistan occupied Kashmir due to spread of coronavirus as the region lacks proper medical facilities and has a handful of COVID-19 testing labs. There is also lack of expert medical staff to conduct COVID-19 tests.

A large number of people here are presumed asymptomatic and they are fast spreading the virus because of lack of medical care.

Pakistan has reported over 1,25,000 coronavirus cases and 2,463 casualties. In Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the COVID-19 cases have increased to 534, whereas in Gilgit-Baltistan 1,030 have been  reported.

Bengaluru, Feb 25: India opening batsman KL Rahul will be available for Karnataka's Ranji Trophy semi-final clash against Bengal at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on February 29.

Rahul had asked to be rested from Karnataka's quarter-final match but is now available for the climactic stages of the Ranji Trophy.

Karnataka had already been strengthened by the addition of Manish Pandey for the quarter-finals, with both Pandey and Rahul having returned from New Zealand after India completed the limited-overs leg of their tour, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Last year's finalists Saurashtra will take on Gujarat in the other semi-final at Rajkot. The other prominent players who will be part of the last four include Parthiv Patel (Gujarat), Jaydev Unadkat (Saurashtra) and Manoj Tiwary (Bengal).

Gujarat, Bengal, Karnataka, and Saurashtra had finished on top of the combined Groups A and B table, and all four progressed to the semi-finals after dominating their respective quarter-final matches.

Rahul has been phenomenal with the bat in the limited-overs series against Australia and New Zealand. He scored one century and four fifty-plus scores in his last ten innings in ODIs and T20Is combined
