Experts question safety features of China's straddling bus

Beijing, Aug 8: China's "straddling bus", trumpeted as an innovative idea to deal with traffic jams, is facing increasing scrutiny with many questioning the vehicle's safety features and whether it would ever come into service, a media report said today.

The Transit Elevated Bus (TEB), grabbed worldwide attention last week after China's official published pictures of the vehicle during a test run on a 300-metre track in Qinhuangdao city in Hebei province.

The bus is designed to run on rails and rises two metres above the road, allowing cars to pass underneath to ease congestion.

While the state-run Xinhua suggested last week the project was an excuse to raise funds rather than create an innovative solution to traffic problem, the experts have also questioned the safety and practicality of the technology, Hong-Kong based South China Morning Post reported.

It would be difficult for the bus to negotiate turns and motorists driving under it would have their line of sight severely limited, increasing the chance of accidents on the road, said Sun Zhang, a transportation professor at Tongji University in Shanghai and an expert in urban track transport systems.

"It can only run on wide and straight roads. In big cities where roads are winding and jammed [with traffic], such roads are in shortly supply. The biggest advantage of this project is that its designers have rich imaginations," he said.

Several employees of the TEB at Qinhuangdao city draped the bus with black curtains to prevent bystanders looking at the vehicle as the project has kindled the interest of curious local residents, the report said.

Also the idea of a bus to ease road congestion is attractive in China where car ownership is rapidly increasing, along with the number of traffic jams.

China had 172 million cars on the road at the end of last year, with 280 million licensed drivers. Research by the car-hailing service Didi Chuxing, based on data gathered in 400 Chinese cities, said the average car speed was less than 25 kmph in the first half of this year, the report said.

The publicity has created a wave of interests specially among the investors. After a series of media reports in China have questioned the technological viability and the feasibility of the project, some investors worried about the scheme to come down to check out the site.

"The company and the project are beset by so many questions. We are all worried," Zhang Ying, an investor, said

He has invested about 500,000 yuan (USD 75085) into Huaying after its sales staff told him annual returns could be as high as 14 per cent, the report said.

Yao Xu, an official in charge of press inquiries at TEB Technology told 'Morning Post' that an "official test run" would be arranged in the coming weeks.

Paris, Jul 2: Several interacting exoplanets have already been spotted by satellites. But a new breakthrough has been achieved with, for the first time, the detection directly from the ground of an extrasolar system of this type.

An international collaboration including CNRS researchers has discovered an unusual planetary system, dubbed WASP-148, using the French instrument SOPHIE at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Universite).

The scientists analysed the star's motion and concluded that it hosted two planets, WASP-148b and WASP-148c. The observations showed that the two planets were strongly interacting, which was confirmed from other data.

Whereas the first planet, WASP-148b, orbits its star in nearly nine days, the second one, WASP-148c, takes four times longer. This ratio between the orbital periods implies that the WASP-148 system is close to resonance, meaning that there is enhanced gravitational interaction between the two planets. And it turns out that the astronomers did indeed detect variations in the orbital periods of the planets.

While a single planet, uninfluenced by a second one, would move with a constant period, WASP-148b and WASP-148c undergo acceleration and deceleration that provides evidence of their interaction.

The study will shortly be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Washington D.C., Jan 12: A recent study has claimed that people end up wasting almost an entire day when they take a vacation.

This can happen while standing in a queue or searching for places to visit, people do not keep a count of the time they have actually utilised during the trip. As a result, they end up doing much lesser activities than they originally had planned.

According to a recent report in Fox News, the study has also shared the fact that people try to justify time waste with planning and scheduling activities whereas the truth is that these things can be done well ahead to save time during the trip.

The average time waste according to the study commissioned by Sykes Holiday Cottages also said the people taking a seven days' trip waste a minimum of 17-and-a-half hours to figure out various factors.

But there are other causes involved as well. When one visits any crowded location, the real-time spent to enjoy the location is lesser than the time spent on reaching and trying to get involved. For instance, if one visits an amusement park, the activities take lesser time than the preparatory and other phases.

Due to impacts of COVID-19, shipments of total mobile phones are forecast to decline 14.6% in 2020, while smartphone shipments will achieve a slightly slower decline of 13.7 % year over year to total 1.3 billion units this year, according to a Gartner forecast on Tuesday.

"While users have increased the use of their mobile phones to communicate with colleagues, work partners, friends and families during lockdowns, reduced disposable income will result in fewer consumers upgrading their phones," Ranjit Atwal, Senior Research Director at Gartner, said in a statement.

"As a result, phone lifetimes will extend from 2.5 years in 2018 to 2.7 years in 2020," said Atwal.

In 2020, affordable 5G phones were expected to be the catalyst to increase phone replacements, but now it is unlikely to be the case.

5G phones are now forecast to represent only 11% of total mobile phone shipments in 2020.

"The delayed delivery of some 5G flagship phones is an ongoing issue," said Annette Zimmermann, Research Vice President at Gartner.

"Moreover, the lack of 5G geographical coverage along with the increasing cost of the 5G phone contract will impact the choice of a 5G phone."

Overall, spending on 5G phones will be impacted in most regions apart from China, where continued investment in 5G infrastructure is expected, allowing providers in China to effectively market 5G phones.

The combined global shipments PCs, tablets and mobile phones are on pace to decline 13.6% in 2020, according to the forecast.

PC shipments are expected to decline 10.5% this year. Shipments of notebooks, tablets and Chromebooks are forecast to decline slower than the PC market overall in 2020.

"The forecasted decline in the PC market in particular could have been much worse," said Atwal.

"However, government lockdowns due to COVID-19 forced businesses and schools to enable millions of people to work from home and increase spending on new notebooks, Chromebooks and tablets for those workers. Education and government establishments also increased spending on those devices to facilitate e-learning."

Gartner said that 48 per cent of employees will likely work remotely at least part of the time after the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 30 % pre-pandemic.

Overall, the work from home trend will make IT departments shift to more notebooks, tablets and Chrome devices for work.

"This trend combined with businesses required to create flexible business continuity plans will make business notebooks displace desk based PCs through 2021 and 2022," said Atwal.
