Mangaluru, Jul 12: Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Alok Mohan on Wednesday said experts from different parts of the state have been roped in to crack the murder of RSS worker Sharat Madiwala.

Sharath, who was stabbed on July 4 at Bantwal, died at a hospital in Mangaluru on July 7. “It is a professional challenge and special teams have been formed to probe the case. Experts have been brought from places outside the Dakshina Kannada district such as Vijayapura, Bagalkot and Kolar. We are making sincere efforts in this regard,” the ADGP told reporters here.

Mohan, who refused to divulge details related to probe, exuded confidence of solving the case soon, with investigators working on strong leads already gathered in the particular case.

Asked if there were any similarities in the murder of Sharath and those of other RSS workers in the past, Rudresh in Bengaluru and Raju in Mysuru, the officer said it would be known only after the current case is solved. It took five months to crack Raju’s murder. He was killed on March 13, 2016.

On investigation into stone-throwing during the funeral procession of Sharath, the ADGP said six cases have been registered and video footage are being examined. In all, 17 people have been arrested in connection with various incidents reported in the recent past in the district, starting from the clash at Kalladka. All those arrested are locals and are not from Kerala, he said to a query.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said that if the BJP and Hindu leaders are arrested on the charges of stone-pelting, then the state government and district in-charge minister B Ramantah Rai Rai would be responsible for all the aftermath incidents in the district.

Kateel said instead of arresting those responsible for throwing stones, assault and other untoward incidents, cases have been filed against BJP leaders who were part of the funeral procession of Sharath. The political conspiracy by the Congress was responsible for unrest in Dakshina Kannada district. The Congress is engaged in appeasing minorities for winning the next Assembly elections, he stated.

The BJP Mahila Morcha will stage a protest against the ‘attempt’ by the state government to suppress the BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders, in Mangaluru on July 13. Yeddyurappa will attend the protest.

The ADGP said Mangaluru police commissioner T R Suresh will take a call on giving permission to the protest meeting planned at Nehru Ground.

Bengaluru, Mar 12: The Karnataka government on Wednesday clarified that no coronavirus "emergency" has been declared in the state and that all the schools and offices will remain open.

Earlier, there were fake reports that Karnataka has declared "coronavirus as an epidemic" in the state.

In a statement, Karnataka health commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey refuted the reports doing rounds on social media which said Karnataka had declared COVID-19 as a "state epidemic".

Refuting the rumours, he added that all the schools, offices and other institutions will continue to function normally in the state.

The Karnataka government earlier today issued temporary regulation which asked all government and private hospitals to have flu corners for screening of suspected cases of COVID-19.

According to the regulation, no person/institution shall use print or electronic media to spread mis-information on COVID-19 without prior permission of the department of health & family welfare. If a person is found indulging in any such activity, they will be punished, it said.

The Karnataka government also started a campaign called 'Namaste over Handshake' that encourages people to greet in the traditional Indian style, to tackle the spread of the virus.

The state has reported four positive cases of coronavirus so far.

India, so far, has 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including 16 Italians tourists.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: The local police will provide security for Sri Nijagunananda Swami and his Kittur Nishkal Mantapa Mutt following a letter containing a threat to his life that was received on Friday.

The letter, containing the names of 15 liberal thinkers and activists, was circulated widely on social media and shown on some Kannada TV channels. The letter is addressed to the seer, and it condemns his lectures where he speaks in favour of liberal values.

“The decision to eliminate you will be taken on January 21. You will be eliminated, along with 15 of your followers and people who think like you,” the letter said.

Among those threatened are Nidumamidi Channammalla Swami, Jnyana Prakash Swami, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, actors Prakash Raj and Chetan Kumar, writer Chandrashekar Patil, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) and writer K.S. Bhagavan.

It is not the first time that the seer is getting such threats. Two years ago, Belagavi Police had provided security to the seer following threats to his life. Last year, he got a phone call from a person from Shivamogga district. But the seer did not bother to complain.

This time, the district police will seek a written complaint from the seer. “We will assess the threat perception and the security levels. Adequate security will be provided,” the police said.

The seer is now camping in Jewargi in Kalaburagi district. “We have intimated the Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police of the need for immediate security arrangements. We will take steps to provide adequate security to him once he arrives in Belagavi district,” Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbaragi said.
