Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to host townhall in IIT Delhi today

New Delhi, Oct 28: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will host a townhall at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on Wednesday where around 900 students are expected to attend the Q&A session. The event will begin at 12 noon.

India is home to over 130 million Facebook users, making it the second largest user base for the world's largest social networking site after the US.

Before coming to India, on Monday Zuckerberg delivered a 20-minute speech in Mandarin at Tsinghua University in China. The young billionaire, who is married to Chinese-American Priscilla Chan, had set himself the goal of learning Mandarin in 2010. After his speech, he shared his accomplishment with his followers on Facebook along with a a video of the speech with English subtitles.

"I just gave my first ever speech in Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing -- on why you need a strong sense of mission to change the world.

"This was also my first real speech in any language sharing how I started thinking about Facebook's mission, what has kept me going through challenging times and what our mission means now looking ahead for our community of 1.5 billion people," he wrote.

Zuckerberg had joined the board of Tsinghua's School of Economics and Management last year. He had last month conversed with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mandarin at a meeting with technology chiefs in the US. Facebook is banned in mainland China and remains untapped for Facebook that has over 1.3 billion users globally.

Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday began his trip to India with a visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra and described it as "even more stunning" than he had expected.

Zuckerberg, who arrived in India to deepen links with a country that is home to the largest number of Facebook users outside the US, said he had "always wanted to see" the Taj Mahal.

"I'm in India for our Townhall Q&A tomorrow, and I decided to visit the Taj Mahal. I've always wanted to see this," he said in his Facebook post. He described the country's most-photographed and photogenic monument as "even more stunning than I expected.

It's incredible what people can build -- and what love can motivate us to build." He also posted picture of him sitting in front of the Taj Mahal that was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the 1600s.

The post already has close to 1 million likes, 20,000 comments and 19,000 shares on Facebook.

New Delhi, Jun 11: Petrol and diesel prices on Thursday were hiked by 60 paise per litre each - the fifth straight daily increase in rates since oil PSUs ended an 82-day hiatus in rate revision.

Petrol price in Delhi was hiked to Rs 74 per litre from Rs 73.40 while diesel rates were increased to Rs 72.22 a litre from Rs 71.62, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

Rates have been increased across the country and vary from state to state depending on the incidence of local sales tax or VAT.

This is the fifth daily increase in rates in a row since oil companies on Sunday restarted revising prices in line with costs, after ending an 82-day hiatus.

In five hikes, petrol price has gone up by Rs 2.74 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.83.

May 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said many states were amending labour laws, but the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse to exploit workers, suppress their voice and crush their human rights.

Gandhi said there cannot be any compromise on the basic principles by allowing unsafe workplaces.

"Many states are amending labour laws. We are together fighting against corona, but this cannot be an excuse to crush human rights, allow unsafe workplaces, exploit workers and suppress their voice," he said.

"There cannot be any compromise on these basic principles," he added.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also said it would be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environment laws in the name of economic revival and stimulus.

"In the name of economic revival and stimulus, it will be dangerous and disastrous to loosen labour, land and environmental laws and regulations as the Modi govt is planning.

"The first steps have already been taken. This is a quack remedy like demonetisation," Ramesh tweeted.

The Indian Defence Ministry, which had in its document that China intruded into the Indian territory in eastern Ladakh in early May, on August 6 took down the page which it had uploaded on its website.

According to a report by news channel NDTV, the ministry, in its document, had said the Chinese aggression has been "increasing along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and more particularly in Galwan valley since May 5."

"The Chinese side has transgressed in the areas of Kungrang Nala, Gogra and north bank of Pangong Tso Lake on May 17-18," the document, titled 'Chinese Aggression on LAC' stated.

The document revealed that "... a violent face-off incident took place between the two sides on June 15, resulting in casualties on both sides."

After the clash, a second corps commander level meeting took place on June 22 to discuss the modalities of de-escalation. "While engagement and dialogue at military and diplomatic level is continuing to arrive at mutually acceptable consensus, the present standoff is likely to be prolonged," it said.

A defence ministry spokesperson told the news channel that the document "did not go through him".

The opposition Congress, meanwhile, asked the government why the report was taken down with party leader Rahul Gandhi alleging that removal of the document from websites would not change facts.

"Forget standing up to China, India's PM lacks the courage even to name them. Denying China is in our territory and removing documents from websites won't change the facts," Gandhi tweeted.
