Facebook friend held for murdering IBM techie with laptop cord

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Two days after a 31-year-old woman employee of IBM was found murdered in her apartment in Bangalore, the police arrested the suspected killer near Gurgaon. Kusuma Rani Singla was transferred to the Karnataka capital six months ago from Noida.

Sukhbir SinghPolice sources said Singla, a divorcee hailing from Punjab, had befriended the suspected killer, identified as Sukhbir Singh, on Facebook few weeks ago.

According to Additional Commissioner (Bengaluru-East) P Harishekaran, Singh, during his meeting with Singla, apparently demanded Rs 50,000 and a flight ticket from her which she denied. He then used a laptop charge cord to strangle her.

Angered by this, he strangulated her to death using a laptop charger cord. A pen was also used in the crime, and an about two-inch deep wound is seen on her right eyebrow, he said. "On January 19, Singh flew into Bangalore from Delhi and went to Singla's house by 12.15pm. He was there till 3.30 pm," Harishekaran said.

An altercation erupted between the two that led to the murder of Singla, he said. Singh collected Singla's ATM cards and chequebooks and even withdrew Rs 11,000 using one of the cards before leaving to Delhi via Mumbai.

He hails from Haryana and has worked as a software engineer with MNCs but is currently unemployed, he said. He said the motive of the murder was yet to be ascertained.

Mangaluru, April 3: A police officer in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district got injured on Friday after unidentified youth pelted stones at him.

The incident took place when the cop stopped them from entering into the state from Kerala in the view of nationwide lockdown. He was later administered medical aid.

Shivamogga, Jun 20: Shivamogga District unit of Congress led by party veteran Kagodu Thimmappa staged a protest against state government's proposal to amend the land reform act, which will allow non-agriculturist to buy farmland.

The leaders of Farmers' Union (Raith Sangh) also staged a protest at Mahaveer circle and questioned CM's stand as he took oath in the name of farmers.

The district congress staged a protest at the premise of the Deputy Commissioner office in Shivamogga city.

The protesters termed Karnataka Government led by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa as an anti-farmers government.

According to Congress and Raith Sang, the proposed amendments to Karnataka State Land reforms act 1961 will cause harm to farmers.

"According to the proposed amendment, non-agriculturists like business tycoons can also purchase the agriculture land. This will help the businessman and will be harmful to farmers," protesters said.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.
