Bengaluru, May 8: A sessions court here has asked Asianet News Network and Suvarna News 24x7 to pay Rs 50 lakh to Congress leader Divya Spandana aka Ramya for wrongly linking her to the IPL spot fixing scam in 2013.

The case was filed in September 2013 after Suvarna News aired a report linking Ramya, a former MP, to the infamous IPL spot fixing case. The channel carried a news report on the alleged involvement of some Kannada actress in the case.

The IIX Additional City Civil and Sessions Court Judge Patil Nagalinganagouda passed the order on April 26 stating that the respondents should give the compensation to the victim within two months from passing of the order.

In the order, the judge observed that there is no evidence to prove the involvement of Ramya who was also the brand ambassador of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for indulging in cricket betting and spot fixing.

The television channel has destroyed the journalism ethics by publishing such a baseless news. It also tarnishes the image of Ramya. The channel has caused irreparable damage to the image and the reputation of the actor, the judge said in the order.
