'Fake' TA?bills: Council Chairman issues notice to eight Karnataka MLCs

Bengaluru, Jun 2: Legislative Council chairman D H Shankaramurthy has served notices to eight MLCs, including six belonging to the Congress, in connection with charges that they claimed about Rs 17 lakh as travel allowance (TA) by reportedly submitting fake bills.dh

The chairman has given time to the MLCs till June 3 to explain their stand on the charges. BJP leader in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Padmanabha Reddy had recently complained to the Chairman and urged him to disqualify these members.

The notice has been issued to Allum Veerabhadrappa, Raghu Achar, N S Boseraju, S Ravi, R B Thimmapura (all Congress), C R Manohar and Appaji Gouda (both JD-S) and M D Lakshminarayana (Independent).

The ruling Congress has cried foul and accused the chairman of trying to scuttle its plan to move a no-confidence motion against him. But Shankaramurthy denied the Congress' charges. “I received the complaint on May 24. The notice was issued on May 26 and the Congress members submitted a notice seeking to move the no-confidence motion on May 31. So my issuing the notice has nothing to do with the no-confidence motion. I am only following the rule of natural justice by seeking their explanation.”

The Congress, which is the single largest party in the Upper House, has decided to oust Shankaramurthy and install its own person as the Chairman. The party has 35 MLCs, including three associate members, in the 75-member House. The party is short of only three members to prove a majority, and is hopeful of getting the JD(S) support. Shankaramurthy is only trying to scare off the Congress from going ahead with the no-confidence motion by threatening to disqualify some of its members, sources in the Council secretariat said.

Padmanabha Reddy had in his complaint said that the eight MLCs had voted in the Bengaluru mayoral elections claiming that they were residents of Bengaluru. However, these MLCs have reportedly drawn close to Rs 17 lakh as the travel allowance from the Council secretariat claiming that they reside in various towns outside Bengaluru. He had also demanded criminal action against these MLCs.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.
 
The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.
 
Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.
 
He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.
 
The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.
 
Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.
 
The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.
 
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.

Mudigre, May 23: The throat swab sample of a Primary Health Care doctor at Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru district tested negative for COVID-19. 

It was wrongly tested positive for COVID-19 on May 19, clarified DC Dr Bagadi Gautham. 

The doctor's throat swab was tested again in Shivamogga and Hassan labs where it has tested negative. He will be discharged from hospital, said the DC.

All the 28 contacts of the doctor too tested negative. 

A total of 485 primary contacts and 961 secondary contacts of the doctor were quarantined after the throat swab of the doctor was tested positive. All the contacts who have been quarantined will be sent back home from quarantine centres, added DC.

Bengaluru, Mar 9: The BJP government in Karnataka on Monday scrapped the Shaadi Bhagya Scheme that was launched by Congress government in the state in 2013.

Under the scheme, Rs 50,000 was given to Muslim brides for marriage expenses after they submitted their Aadhar and BPL cards.

While the previous coalition government had allocated Rs 60 crore budget for the scheme, the BJP government decided to discontinue the scheme. Congress called the move by the state government as "anti-minority".

"They have launched a scheme for the majority community. I welcome that. But why are you discontinuing one scheme? It is a small scheme where marginalized people get a little help from the government," Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad told reporters.

"He (Karnataka Chief Minister) has wilfully reduced the money allotted to all the schemes," he added.

BJP MLA Basavana Gowda Patil Yantal welcomed the decision of the Karnataka Government to scrap the scheme.

"The minority does not need appeasement because equal citizenship needs to apply to all in this country. I wholeheartedly welcome this move by the Karnataka Government," Yantal told reporters.

"Should we not give the majority people anything in India? India not giving anything to the majority, is that secular? We have already given them Pakistan," he said.

The MLAs from the minority community in the state have demanded a meeting with the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
