Bhatkal (Uttara Kannada), Jan 21: Nearly four years after the dowry death woman from Bhatkal, a local court in Shivamogga has awarded jail term for four members of a family.
While the husband of the deceased woman has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for ten years, her father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment.
Asha, a resident of Bhatkal, was married to Umesh, a resident of Upparakeri locality in Shivamogga, in April 2012. It is alleged that Umesh, his father Narayana Shet, his mother Sumithra Bai and sister Roopa were harassing Asha for dowry. On February 26, 2015, when Asha was asleep, they strangled her to death.

Cases under various sections of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and under section 302 (punishment for murder) and 498(A) (husband or relative of the husband subjecting the woman to cruelty) of Indian Penal Code were booked against them.
The Principal District and Sessions Court has also slapped an amount of Rs. 17,000 as fine on Umesh and Rs. 12,000 each on three others convicted in the case.
