Family on its way to hospital meets with accident; 2 killed, 2 others critical

Mangaluru, May 2: Two persons lost their lives and two others belonging to the same family sustained critical injuries in a ghastly road mishap occurred on Monday near Sampaje in Sullia taluk of Dakshia Kannada district.

The tragedy occurred when a family from Kadanga in Kodagu district was heading towards Mangaluru on a Maruti Omni car. A speeding container lorry coming from the opposite direction rammed into the car while negotiating a curve.

It is learnt that Maqbool (60), his wife Zulaika (55) was taking their son Saleem to a hospital in Mangaluru for treatment as the latter was suffering from heart related ailment. Yusuf (35) was driving the car.

Maqbool and Yusuf died on the spot when the collision took place. The other two who were on the backseat were injured critically.

Local residents pulled out the dead bodies from the car and shifted the injured to hospital. A case has been registered at jurisdictional police station.

Mangaluru, May 18: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today reported two more covid-19 positive cases. One is a 30-year-old man and the other is a 55-year-old woman.

The man, a resident of Karopady in Bantwal, had returned from Raigad in Maharashtra and is under quarantine.

The woman, a resident of Yeyyadi, had fever and hence visited Wenlock hospital for test. She was diagnosed to have Severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) symptoms and later tested positive. She has been shifted to ICU. 

With this the total number of covid-19 positive cases in the district rose to 54. Among them 48 are from Dakshina Kannada and six patients are from other districts.

Udupi, June 21: An entrepreneur lost his life after the car he was driving veered off the road and plunged into a roadside tank near Barkuru in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district today.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Shetty, a resident of Vakwadi in Kundapur taluk. He is the proprietor of Laxmi Glass and Plywood, Koteshwara. 

A woman, identified as Shweta, who was also on board the car suffered critical injuries.  

The mishap occurred when the duo was heading to Vakwadi from Brahmavar in Hyundai Car sedan car. 

Shetty lost control over his vehicle while negotiating a curve at Chaulikere and the car plunged off the road as there was no barricade. 

Even though local residents began rescue operation immediately, Shetty breathed his last on the spot. Shweta was rescued and shifted to a hospital in Manipal for treatment.

Udupi, Feb 11: In a tragic incident, a 62-year-old man from Chennai died of drowning in Sri Krishna Mutt’s Madhwa Sarovar (pond) during the wee hours of Tuesday.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Capt G Sridharan.

It is suspected that Sridharan accidentally fell into the holy pond while taking a bath. The incident is said to have occurred around 4 a.m.
