Farooq_Abdullah_copyNew Delhi, Dec 6: At a time when the nation is debating safety of women at workplaces, Union minister Farooq Abdullah on Friday triggered a fresh row by saying that the situation is so bad that he is afraid of speaking to women these days.

Referring to the recent indictment of former SC judge Justice AK Ganguly by the SC panel, Abdullah said, "These days, I am afraid of talking to women. In fact I don't even want to keep a woman secretary, god forbid, if there's a complaint against me and I end up in jail."

On being asked if he is blaming women for the sudden spurt in crime against them, Abdullah said, "I am not blaming women, but the society."

"Such is the state of affairs today. I agree that incidents of rape have increased...but this has to stop somewhere," he added.

Abdullah drew flak from Congress as well opposition parties for his sexist comment.

Reacting to his comment, Congress leader Ambika Soni said, "I don't expect such comments (from him)."

BJP leader Smriti Irani said, "It is a very, very demeaning comment by such a senior political leader."

His son Omar Abdullah, Jammu & Kashmir chief minister, later on tweeted, "I'm sure the attempt wasn't to trivialise important issue of women's security so I hope dad apologises for the misplaced attempt at humour."

The fallout of Farooq Abdullah's quote was immediate on social networking site Twitter.

Reacting to his statement, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien tweeted, "Dr Abdullah, what have you gone and said! Expect more sensitivity from a senior public figure. And the father of a daughter."

Social activist Kiran Bedi said, "When men say they are afraid of hiring or talking to women as Farooq Abdullah did. They are visibly a victim of their own insecurity!"

Abdullah was forced to retract his controversial statement within hours.

"If I said something that hurt sentiments then I am sorry," Abdullah said. "My comments were misconstrued."

Jun 13: The Congress on Saturday accused the BJP-led government of burdening the common man with high taxes on petrol and diesel and earning Rs 2.5 lakh crore since March 5.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal said while international crude oil prices have fallen and are at the lowest level in 15 years, yet petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing and common people continue to suffer under the Modi dispensation.

He said instead of passing the benefit of lower crude prices to consumers, petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the seventh straight day on June 13.

"The government has earned as much as Rs 44,000 crore in the last six days due to hike in petrol, diesel prices. Since March 5, the government has earned as much as Rs 2.5 lakh crore by way of increasing petrol, diesel prices.

"If the government had even the slightest feelings for the common man, instead of benefitting the companies and the government, the prime minister would have helped the common man with reduced fuel prices," Sibal said at an online press conference.

According to a report by Care Ratings, he said the hike effectively meant that the Central government is collecting around 270 per cent taxes on the base price of petrol and 256 per cent in case of diesel.

The former union minister said petrol was selling at Rs 71.41 in Delhi on May 1, 2014, when international crude oil prices were USD 106.85, while on June 12, 2020, the price of petrol was Rs 75.16 when the crude oil was at USD 38.

He said central excise and VAT cumulatively account for 69 per cent of tax on fuel in India which is higher than anywhere else in the world. He said the tax of fuel in the US was 19 per cent, Japan 47 per cent, the UK 62 per cent, France 63 per cent and Germany 65 per cent.

Kolkata, Jan 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said a section of the youth is being misguided about the Citizenship Amendment Act and asserted that it will not take away anybody's citizenship.

Modi also said whoever has faith in India and believes in its Constitution can become an Indian citizen.

“There are a lot of questions among the youth about the new citizenship law, and some are being misled by rumours around it... it is our duty to clear their doubts,” the PM said during an address at Belur Math in Howrah district.

“I want to make this clear again that the CAA is not about taking away anybody's citizenship, but about granting citizenship,” he added.

Modi said that some people with political interests are deliberately spreading rumours about the new citizenship law.

Lauding the youth for speaking against religious persecution of minorities, the prime minister said the energy of the country's young will form the basis of change in the 21st century. The PM is on a two-day visit to the city.
