Mumbai, Feb 26: Physician-turned-Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik, against whom the Enforcement Directorate has issued a summons in a money laundering case, has sent another letter stating the agency can send a questionnaire to him as he fears arrest in case of personal appearance.Zakir-Naik

"Our apprehension regarding the probe stood fortified with the arrest of Aamir Gazdar (Naik's confidante), which we are afraid will be the fate of our client in case of personal appearance," Naik said in a letter sent through his lawyer Mahesh Mule. The televangelist stated the agency can send him a questionnaire and that he would respond to it.

Dr Naik stated though he was an NRI, the ED still told the court that he was not joining the investigation and was trying to mislead the probe. ED is probing the preacher and his now proscribed Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) under anti-money laundering laws.

In the summons last month, Dr Naik was asked to appear before the Investigating Officer of the case under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by January end. The agency wants to record the statement of Naik, who is understood to be abroad.

The ED had registered a criminal case against Naik and IRF last month after taking cognisance of a complaint booked by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against them. The agency is looking into the charges of alleged illegal funds laundered by the accused and the subsequent proceeds of crime thus generated.

Responding to the summons earlier this week, Dr Naik had sent a communication stating he was willing to give statement via any electronic media facility. "My client is willing and ready to give any statement before you via Skype or any other mode of electronic media to assist you in your investigation," he stated in the letter sent through his lawyer.

Karwar: The number of Covid-19 patients in Uttara Kannada district has gone up to 39 with seven more persons from Bhatkal testing positive for the virus on Sunday.

These seven persons include five men and two women. Among them, the youngest is 15 years and the eldest is 60 years. Rest of the patients are 50, 21, 16, 42, and 31 years old, a health bulletin said. All the new seven cases are contacts of the eight persons who were found positive on Saturday.

Of the new cases, one is an auto-rickshaw driver who had reportedly transported one of the patients. Now the administration is collecting the details of the driver’s journeys and the persons who had travelled in his auto-rickshaw. It is said that some of these persons who were confirmed positive on Sunday had travelled to Udupi and moved around in Bhatkal town to buy medicine.

The pressure on the administration is increasing with new positive cases being detected in Bhatkal town every day. After the first 11 cases, there were no new cases for 20 days. However, since Friday, there is sudden spike in the number of new cases in Bhatkal town.

Mangaluru, Jul 4: Normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy rain under the influence of South East Monsoon started lashing coastal districts of Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.

The heavy rain is likely to continue till July 7, according to the meteorological experts.

The water level in Netravati river is increasing and district administration has warned the people living in the low lying areas and has asked them to move to safer places.

Owing to lack of storm water drains, water logging of the roads inconvenienced the motorists at KS Rao Road, Pumpwell, Bejai, and other areas.

The Met department sounded warning for fishermen not to venture into the sea observing that strong winds with speed reaching 50-60 kmph are likely to prevail over Southwest and West Central Arabian Sea till July 5.
