Fearing Dalit backlash, Dharma Sansad organisers prevent seer from speaking against reservation

Udupi, Nov 26: Sangh Parivar’s fear to raise voice against caste-based reservation in a poll-bound state was clearly visible during the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Dharma Sansad in Udupi. The organisers intervened when a veteran seer called for the abolition of caste-based reservation in India.

Speaking at the Dharma Sansad, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Narendranand Saraswati of Kashi Sumeru said that reservation should be based on talent of a person rather than his caste or religion.

The Dharma Sansad organisers, who have been apparently tried to woo lower caste Hindus ahead of Karnataka assembly polls, became alert and asked the seer to change the topic saying that it was not the right platform to talk on reservation. 

The seer also understood the intention behind the organisers’ restriction and changed the topic without any argument. He then urged the Hindus to be prepared to fight against their enemies. 

It could be recalled here that BJP had faced debacle in last Bihar assembly polls wherein a few Sangh Parivar leaders had raised voice against caste-based reservation a few days before the elections.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Karnataka on Tuesday reported its biggest single-day spike of 6,259 Covid-19 cases and 110 fresh deaths, taking the total infection count to 1,45,830 and the toll to 2,704, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 6,777 patients getting discharged after recovery, outnumbering the fresh cases. Out of 6,259 fresh cases, a total of 2,035 cases were from Bengaluru Urban district. The previous biggest single-day record was on July 30 when the state added 6,128 cases.

A bulletin from the department said cumulatively 1,45,830 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and it included 2,704 deaths and 69,272 discharges. Out of the 73,846 active cases, as many as 73,212 patients were stable in isolation at designated hospitals while 634 in the intensive care units.

Among the fresh deaths, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 30 followed by Dakshina Kannada (13) and Mysuru (9).

Most of the people who succumbed either had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI), the bulletin said. Besides Bengaluru Urban, the other districts which reported higher fresh cases on Tuesday are Mysuru 662, Kalaburagi 285, Ballari 284, Belagavi 263, Dakshina Kannada 225, Davangere 191, Dharwad and Hassan 188. Bengaluru Urban district continued to top the list of positive cases with a total of 63,033 infections, followed by Ballari 7,638 and Dakshina Kannada 6,388.

Among discharges too Bengaluru Urban tops the districts with 27,877 discharges, followed by Ballari 3,724 and Kalaburagi 3,470. A total of 14,89,016 samples had been tested so far, out of which 42,458 on Tuesday with 29,488 being rapid antigen tests.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: The District Wenlock Hospital Superintendent Dr H R Rajeshwaridevi has filed a complaint with the police on Tuesday seeking action against those circulating fake videos of a man infected with COVID-19, at the hospital.

In the video, a man was seen struggling to breathe at a hospital. The message in the video says that the man was admitted at Wenlock Hospital.

Dr Rajeshwaridevi, who issued a clarification, stated that video clips which are being circulated on social media is not from Wenlock Hospital.

Moreover, Wenlock Hospital does not use blue colour beds.

Bengaluru, Mar 6: PVR Cinemas on Friday launched its five-screen multiplex in here, augmenting its presence in Karnataka across 15 properties to 103 screens and to 46 properties and 286 screens in southern India.

With this opening, PVR consolidates its growth momentum in the current financial year 2019-20, so far opening 83 screens in the year and bringing its portfolio to 841 screens at 176 properties in 71 cities.

"We feel proud to cross the 100 screens milestone in the state of Karnataka at the very beginning of the year," said Joint Managing Director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli.
