FIFA World Cup 2018 Qualifier: India face spirited Guam

June 16, 2015

Guam, Jun 16: In keeping with coach Stephen Constantine’s new rotational captaincy policy, striker Sunil Chhetri has been handed the armband as India aim for full points against Guam in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers here on Tuesday.

India GuamWhile India went down 1-2 after a spirited fight to higher-ranked Oman in their previous match, Guam created history with an upset solitary goal win over Turkmenistan.

India will draw inspiration from the fact that they defeated Guam 4-0 in their previous match, besides counting the positives from their narrow defeat to Oman in Bengaluru.

As far as the team combination is concerned, Constantine is unlikely to tinker with the line-up. Chhetri and Robin Singh will lead the attack. Chhetri made a statement by scoring a gem of a goal against Oman and the Bengaluru FC skipper will look to add to his tally against the Guam defence.

Chhetri’s importance can be gauged from the fact that he has scored all the three goals that India have scored in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers till now. A new-look defence cracked early against Oman and Arnab Mondal, the skipper in the previous match, will have to guide the youngsters Dhanachandra Singh and Lalchhaummawia through the tough periods.

Though India are ranked above Guam in FIFA rankings, Constantine isn’t willing to read much into the disparity. “We are not in a position to look at the FIFA rankings. Every team have their pluses and minuses. Guam, having won their last match against Turkmenistan, are going to be encouraged,” Constantine said.

Speaking about his opponents, he said, “They have a couple of their players playing in the USA. They have the edge of having back to back home games.

“But we are here to win the game. Whoever the opponent may be, we go to the field with a positive mind frame.”

Guam coach Gary White said: “It’s likely to be a competitive one. Win or perish – both teams would go out to get those three points. We have watched India’s match against Oman and must say that there seems to be a new life in the Indian team. They looked very organised and it will be difficult to break them down,” he stated.

The match will be held at 11:45 am IST.

Sydney, Mar 14: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson has been placed under 24-hour isolation amid the fears of coronavirus after he reported a sore throat following the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series against Australia in Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which the hosts won by 71 runs.

"In accordance with recommended health protocols, Lockie Ferguson has been placed in isolation at the team hotel for the next 24 hours after reporting a sore throat at the end of the first ODI," said New Zealand Cricket in a statement.

"Once the test results are received and diagnosed, his return to the team can be determined," it added.

The first ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee series was played in front of empty stands as the spectators were not allowed to be at SCG as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, Australian fast bowler, Kane Richardson was also tested for the coronavirus, after suffering from a sore throat on Thursday. That saw him left out of the squad for Friday's game but the test was negative.

Islamabad, Jun 23: Seven more Pakistan cricketers, including Muhammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz, selected for the tour of England have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the total to 10, the PCB revealed on Tuesday.

The seven who tested positive on Tuesday are Kashif Bhatti, Muhammad Hasnain, Fakhar Zaman, Muhammad Rizwan, Imran Khan, Hafeez and Riaz. Shadab Khan, Haider Ali and Haris Rauf had returned positive tests on Monday.

“It is not a great situation to be in and what it shows is these are 10 fit and young athletes...if it can happen to players it can happen to anyone,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO, Wasim Khan told a media conference.

He said a support staff member, masseur Malang Ali, had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Khan said that the players and officials would now assemble in Lahore and another round of tests would be carried out on June 25 and a revised squad would be announced the next day.

The squad has to leave on June 28 for the series scheduled to be held next month, he said.

“It is a matter of concern but we shouldn’t panic at this time as we have time on our hands,” Khan said.

He said the players and officials would be retested on reaching England.
