Film shoot blast deaths: KFCC says there’s very little it can do

Bengaluru, Apr 2: The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce(KFCC) on Monday washed its hands of any responsibility towards Friday’s cylinder blast at a film shoot site, which left a 28-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter dead.

“We can’t get involved in the matter. We can only arrange a meeting between the crew of the film Ranam and family members of the woman. But currently, their phones are switched off,” said KFCC president, SA Chinne Gowda.

Gowda’s statement comes after family members of Samina Banu and Ayesha Banu, who were killed in the blast, met KFCC office-bearers seeking justice. “It has been over four days since the incident took place but police and KFCC haven’t done anything to make the Ranam team accountable for the tragedy, which happened due to the crew’s negligence,” said Samina’s husband Tabrez Khan.

A tearful Tabrez said his wife and child meant the world to him and he was taking them to their aunt’s place when the tragedy occurred. “My younger daughter is traumatized and is longing for her mother. How do I handle this,” he asked.

Samina’s brother-in-law Munnavar Khan said since the incident, no one from the KFCC or film crew has shown sympathy to the family. “Not a single person from the Kannada film industry has spoken to us or consoled us,” rued Munnavar.

Bengaluru, Mar 30: Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL) has received the first tranche of Rs 2,000 crore following disinvestment of Global Village Techparks to repay debts following the death of its founder V G Siddhartha.
In August last year, CDEL executed definitive agreements with entities belonging to Blackstone Group and Salarpuria Sattva Group for investment in GV Techparks, a wholly-owned subsidiary of group company Tanglin Development Ltd (TDL), at an enterprise value of Rs 2,700 crore.
The balance amount is expected to be received after the receipt of few statutory approvals, CDEL said in a statement.
"Out of the money received in first tranche, the company has paid off its debts in full including principal and interest amounting to Rs 1,644 crore to the lenders despite difficult economic conditions," it said.
Post this payment, the consolidated debt of the company and its subsidiaries stands at Rs 3,200 crore as on March 27. This includes debt of Rs 1,400 crore of its subsidiary Sical Logistics Ltd where disinvestment process is in progress.
"The company and subsidiaries have repaid around Rs 4,000 crore to the lenders since the beginning of this financial year," CDEL said.
"With the continuous support of stakeholders of the company, the current management is working to ensure better liquidity and operational efficiency. The company is confident of the future ahead despite various challenges," it added.
The company has been in rough waters after its founder V G Siddhartha took his own life as debt strains began to emerge in his company. Since his death in July last year, CDEL has been trying to divest its assets to pare debts.
On July 30, 2019, CDEL informed stock exchanges about Siddhartha's disappearance. In a letter that was purportedly written by him, the Cafe Coffee Day founder said: "I could not take any more pressure from one of the private equity partners forcing me to buy back shares."

Bengaluru, Jul 28: In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday advised people not to visit temples, mosques and other places of worship during the coming festival season.

"COVID-19 is now spreading rapidly in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru. The festival season is starting with Varamahalakshmi festival on July 31, followed by Bakrid, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Gowri Ganesha, Moharram and then Onam. This festival season is the riskiest time for the spread of the coronavirus. Therefore, please STRICTLY follow the rules in order to stay safe. Do not visit religious places even if they are officially declared open," a notification from BBMP said.

In the context of Bakrid, unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) was prohibited in BBMP limits on roads and sidewalks, religious places, school and college premises, playgrounds and other public areas, as per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act of 1976.

"Unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) is a punishable offence under Section 3 of the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959 and Rules and the Amendment Act 1975, which provides for a maximum penalty of six months or Rs 1000, or both. According to the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959, slaughter-worthy animals can only be slaughtered in official slaughterhouses," the notification said.

Mangaluru, Mar 21: The management of Ibrahim Khaleel mosque here on Saturday has decided to temporarily suspend all the prayers inside the mosque premises as a precautionary measure in view of Corona Virus which is spreading like wildfire in the State.

In an official note, the management urged people to remain safe and to pray at home adding that Jumuah, daily prayers and all the other events at the mosques were cancelled temporarily until further notice.

“This is an unavoidable move to save the lives from the infections of deadly Coronavirus” the note added on Saturday.
