Mangaluru, Sep 9: A first information report (FIR) was registered against Dakshina Kannada MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, for obstructing a government officer from doing his duty.
During the BJP’s ‘Mangaluru Chalo’ on Thursday, Kateel had lambasted Mangaluru East Police Inspector Maruthi G Nayak for registering cases against those detained during the rally. He also threatened to issue a shutdown call if the cases were registered. The video of the incident went viral. Political parties and organisations demanded that a case be registered against Kateel.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner T R Suresh said the FIR was registered under IPC Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) on a complaint filed by Nayak.
FIRs were registered at Mangaluru North and South police stations against BJP leaders for taking out the rally in violation of prohibitory orders. Microphones, podium and other publicity materials have been seized, DCP Hanumantharaya said.
