First Bishop of Karwar William D'Mello dies in Mangalore

Mangalore, July 19: The first Bishop of Karwar diocese, Most Rev William Leonard D'Mello passed away in Mangalore on Tuesday after a brief illness.

Prior to his appointment as the Bishop of Karwar he was the Bishop of Goa. He was 80. He breathed his last at the Father Muller Hospital in Mangalore, where he had been undergoing treatment.

He had relinquished his office as the Bishop of Karwar due to his old age and illness and his resignation was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI on February 24, 2007 and Most Rev. Derek Fernandes was appointed his successor.

He was born on March 24, 1931 at Cascia, which was then a part of the Rosario Cathedral parish of the Diocese of Mangalore.

After his studies at St. Aloysius College, he joined the Minor Seminary at Bangalore to become a priest for the Archdiocese of Bangalore.

He was well-versed in Latin and other languages.

After his retirement, Bishop William was residing at 'Sandhya Vandan', the Senior Clergy Home built by him at Shirwad, in the compound adjoining 'Puneeth Sadan', the diocesan headquarters.

Bengaluru, Feb 17: The Karnataka govt has set up an exclusive helpline 104 'Arogya Sahayavani' for Coronavirus assistance to people with recent travel history to China and other affected countries, a statement said here on Monday.

According to the statement, the Karnataka Department of Family and Welfare set up the exclusive helpline 104, 'Arogya Sahayavani' on Sunday. People, who recently traveled to China and other affected countries and who have developed symptoms of Covid-19 virus are requested to immediately contact 104–Arogya Sahayavani or the health authorities and provide all necessary details in order to take precautionary measures.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the recent novel Coronavirus (COVID 2019) as an International Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Bengaluru, May 1: Former underworld don and real-estate baron Muthappa Rai was admitted to Manipal hospital in Bengaluru on Thursday.

As per sources, Muttappa Rai’s condition is said to be serious.

Muthappa Rai was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago and had undergone treatment at hospitals in New Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Kasaragod, Apr 21: Kerala reported a spike in COVID-19 cases on Tuesday with 19 people testing positive, after a decline in the numbers in the past few days, as the total infections touched 426 in the southern state.

Kannur recorded 10 cases, Palakkad four, Kasaragod three and Malappuram and Kollam one each, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters here.

The number of those getting infected were in single digits over the past few days.

Of the 10 positive cases from Kannur, nine of them had come from abroad and one had been infected through contact, he said.

Pointing out that the positive cases in Palakkad,Malappuram and Kollam had come from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, Vijayan said there is need to enforce strict vigilance in places bordering neighbouring states.

Sixteen people tested negative on Tuesday, while the total active cases 117, he added.

At least 32,000 people are under observation,

Of the around 20,000 samples sent, 19,440 had returned negative, Vijayan said.
