Fisherman drowns as mechanized boat overturns; 7 rescued

Udupi, Aug 28: A fisherman was washed away after the mechanised boat in which he and seven other fishermen went overturned in the Arabian Sea near Hejmady village in Udupi district on Sunday.

According to the police, Mohandas, a fisherman, had gone for fishing along with his seven friends, Tarun Puthran, Priyank, Bharat, Harish, Sukumar, Padmanabh and Praveeen, in his mechanised boat, Vithoba Rakhumai, from the Hejmady fisheries harbour at around 8 a.m.

But when their boat reached Mulki mouth of estuary, they found that the sea was rough. They decided to return to the Hejmady harbour. But as they were returning at around 10.30 a.m., the boat, which was hit by high sea waves, overturned. All the eight fishermen fell into the sea.

However, another fishing boat was following and the fishermen in that boat managed to rescue Mohandas and six others. But one of them, Tarun Puthran (26), got caught in the sea waves and went missing.

Priyank and Bharat, who suffered injuries, were shifted to Srinivas Hospital at Mukka. Though search operations were carried on till 6 p.m., the body was not traced. The search operations would be resumed at 7.30 a.m. on Monday. A missing case has been registered at the Padubidri police station, the police said.

Hubli, Feb 19: The Karnataka Police on Wednesday registered a case against unknown persons for assaulting three Kashmiri students in the court premises here.

A suo motu FIR has been registered at Vidyanagar police station of Hubli in which assault charges have been filed against 10 to 15 unknown people.

It can be recalled that on February 17 these three Kashmiri students were attacked in court premises after they were produced in court on charges of sedition.

The Kashmiri students were arrested here on February 15 after their video in which they are seen allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans went viral.

The students were studying at the KLE Institute of Technology on a central government scholarship.

Udupi, Jul 8: A 15-year-old boy belonging to Saligrama in Udupi district, who was under home quarantine with his mother, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself yesterday.

His throat swabs were sent for testing. The report received today and it showed that he did not have coronavirus.
 
The boy, a class ten student studying in Kota, was quarantined along with his mother at home after a person in a family, where she was working as a maid tested positive for Covid-19.

The boy is suspected to have taken the extreme step out of depression as he was not allowed to go out. The last rites were held today.

Kasaragod, May 30: Karnataka origin IPS officer D Shilpa has been appointed the new Superintendent of Police of Kasargod district.

The 35-year-old 2016-batch IPS officer is the first woman SP of Kasaragod. 

Her appointment follows the sudden transfer of P S Sabu who was hitherto holding the post. He has now been appointed as SP of Alappuzha.

Shilpa has earlier served as ASP of Kasargod. She was also ASP of Kannur during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Shilpa was one of the three IPS officers assigned to Kasaragod with IG Vijay Sakhare during the first phase of covid lockdown.

A native of HSR Layout in Bengaluru, Shilpa holds a Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering and a Masters Degree in Business Administration.
