Fishers' Cup-2011 gets underway at Ullal

Mangalore, March12: Krishna Bhaire Gowda, president of state Youth Congress committee on Friday evening inaugurated “Fishers' Cup-2011”, National level flood light Tennis Ball Cricket (Over Arm) and Inter-State Kabbadi tournament “Fishers' Cup-2011” at Ullal Sea Ground.

The three day tournament, which will conclude on March 13, is being organised under the joint auspices of Mukkacheri Friends Circle and Diamond Sports Club.

The winners would get Rs 1,00,001 as prize along with Fishers' Cup while second prize would be Rs 50,001 besides the runners up trophy.

Other prizes include Man of the Match, Man of the Series, Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Best Fielder, Best Wicket Keeper and Rs 5000 each for two teams that lose in the semi finals.

Teams from Goa, Kerala, Bangalore, and Karnataka are participating in the tournament. The entry fee was Rs 10,000.

Former MP Vinaya Kumar Sorake, MLA UT Khader, Congress leader Ivan D'Souza were among those present at the inaugural programme.

New Delhi, Jun 5: Congress has named Mallikarjun Kharge as its candidate for ensuing biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

Party interim president Sonia Gandhi approved Kharge's candidature on Friday, according to a Congress release by general secretary Mukul Wasnik.

The elections to fill the pending 18 Rajya Sabha seats from seven states will be held on June 19.

Udupi, Mar 30: Karnataka Home Minister and Udupi district in-charge Basavaraj Bommai has urged citizens to stay indoors and help government prevent spread of Covid-19.

In a video released by the Minister on Monday, he said, ''Three patients have been cured and we are observing their situation. All the primary contacts of these patients have been quarantined.''

''In Dr TMA Pai Hospital a 100-bed COVID hospital has been set up and a 150-bed SDM hospital in Udyavara is ready to use as isolation facilities,'' he added.

Newsroom, Jun 16: A 35-year-old Kannada lecturer died in a motorbike accident at Tumkuru in Karnataka.

The deceased is K N Swamy, who was a guest lecturer in Department of Kannada at Central University of Kerala located at Periya in Kasaragod district.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when he was riding his motorbike.

Swamy was also a writer and poet in Kannada.
