Mangaluru, Jun 7: In a heartrending incident, five of the six cows that were stuffed in an SUV were killed after the vehicle met with an accident near Mundaje under the limits of Dharmasthala police station on the outskirts of the city today.

It is learnt that the car that was transporting cattle illegally toppled and fell into a ditch as the driver lost control over the vehicle.

According to the police, soon after the incident, vehicle occupants have fled from the spot. While five heads of cattle were found dead on the spot, another has received severe injuries and given treatment.

Police added that incident took place around 4am or 5am. However, locals noticed it around 6am.

Locals suspect that miscreants were transporting cattle after feeding them with food laced with sedative substances. Police have recovered a pack of bread which has chemical substances.

The car was bearing a Bengaluru registration number(KA05MQ4824). Police suspects that either the vehicle was stolen or the number plate was changed to evade identity. The miscreants had confined six cattle in the back seat portion and covered all panes using plastic sheet.

“We will come to know who the real owner was after checking vehicle engine and chassis number,” said a police officer who is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal members have condemned the incident and blamed the police and district administration. Dinesh Charmady, Bajarang Dal Gauraksha Pramukh, Belthangady Taluk, alleged that it is a serious lapse on part of the police that cattle is being transported illegally even in an SUV.
