Five members of family perish as truck rams into car

Shivamogga, Apr 30: Five members of a family were killed and an eight-year-old girl was seriously injured in a head-on collision between a car and a truck on National Highway 206 near Chikkadanavandi village in Shivamogga taluk on Tuesday.

The police have named the deceased as Manjunath, 30, a software engineer from Shivamogga who was driving the car; Neelakantappa, 42, assistant executive engineer with Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) in Birur, who is Manjunath’s brother-in-law; his sister Usha, 30, a lecturer; ; his mother Mangalamma, 50, and Nandish, 10, Neelakantappa’s son.

Mr. Neelakantappa’s daughter is the injured person. The police said the family was travelling to Kumsi to attend a ceremony. The driver of the truck is absconding.

Vehicular movement on the highway was disrupted for sometime owing to the accident.

Udupi: Entrepreneur killed, woman cortically injured as car plunges into tank

Udupi, June 21: An entrepreneur lost his life after the car he was driving veered off the road and plunged into a roadside tank near Barkuru in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district today.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Shetty, a resident of Vakwadi in Kundapur taluk. He is the proprietor of Laxmi Glass and Plywood, Koteshwara.

A woman, identified as Shweta, who was also on board the car suffered critical injuries.

The mishap occurred when the duo was heading to Vakwadi from Brahmavar in Hyundai Car sedan car.

Shetty lost control over his vehicle while negotiating a curve at Chaulikere and the car plunged off the road as there was no barricade.

Even though local residents began rescue operation immediately, Shetty breathed his last on the spot. Shweta was rescued and shifted to a hospital in Manipal for treatment.

Congress creating confusion among Muslim over CAA, claims BSY

Bengaluru, Jan 5: BJP leader and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa once again blamed the Congress of creating 'confusion' among the Muslim community over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019 while launching a door to door campaign to dispel such rumors.

Yediyurappa was on a door-to-door campaign to make people aware of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and to allay their fears.

"Unnecessarily, the members of Congress are creating confusion among the Muslim community. I assure you that not a single Muslim will be affected because of CAA," said B. S. Yediyurappa.

"Almost all previous Prime Ministers have supported it, now Congress is creating a problem so as to create confusion among Muslims. That's why we are out on the door-to-door campaign," he said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

463 newly built houses handed over to flood victims in Kodagu

Madikeri, Jun 5: Karnataka Minister for Revenue R Ashok said a Rs 10 crore grant would be released shortly for construction of a permanent building for 'Relief Centre' in Kodagu district which is vulnerable to floods because of its hilly landscape.

According to an official release here on Friday, the Minister symbolically handed over the newly built houses to flood victims in Jambur in Somwarpet on Thursday evening.

He said that whenever the 'Relief Centre' is vacant it will be used for government meetings.
