Flagship rice programme made a good impact on the poor: CM

August 26, 2013
Bangalore, Aug 26: Brimming with confidence after the Congress wrested two Lok Sabha seats from the JDS, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today sought to showcase the initiatives of his government asserting that the flagship rice programme has made a positive impact on the poor.

Quoting a woman who interacted with him, Siddaramaiah said BPL families are now able to save Rs 800 per month following the government's decision to implement "Anna Bhagya" which entails Rs 4,200 crore subsidy, providing a maximum of 30 kgs of rice at Re one from July 10 for BPL families.

"It has made a very good impact on poor people," the Chief Minister said at a press conference highlighting the achievements of his government after it completed 100-days in office on August 20.

From October two, ragi, jowar and wheat would also be provided at Re one, along with rice, with total quantity not exceeding 30 kgs as per the demand from people from different regions.

Stating that the government is monitoring implementation of the rice programme closely, he said licence of 43 fair price shops have been cancelled when it came to light that they were selling half the quantity in open market at hefty rates after giving the other half to the beneficiaries free of cost.

He said "Ksheera Bhagya" programme being implemented in the state, providing 150 ml milk thrice a week to 1.04 crore school and Anganawadi children would address the issue of hunger and malnutrition.

"The whole intention of the government is to make Karnataka a hunger-free State," Siddaramaiah, who was in a jovial mood after the Congress candidates won the Mandya and Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha bypoll last week, giving a jolt to the JDS in its stronghold.

"More than 60 poll promises of the over 160 made by the Congress has been announced in the budget and they will be implemented in the current financial year," added the Chief Minister, who recapped the Congress government's other initiatives announced during the period.

Bengaluru, Apr 8: In a strong show of support, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa stood behind the minorities in the state and said no one should target the Muslim community over the coronavirus crisis and the Tablighi Jamaat.

He said those communalising the issue will be dealt with strictly.

BS Yediyurappa was speaking to a regional media channel when he said "Nobody should speak a word against Muslims. This is a warning. If anyone blames the entire Muslim community for some isolated incident, I'll take action against them also without a second thought. Will not allow that to happen."

Since then, many have welcomed the CM's remarks including the opposition.

Former Karnataka Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao tweeted and said that other BJP leaders should follow the Karnataka CM and that it's a welcome step.

Congress president DK Shivakumar too said he agrees with the chief minister and that no one should target one community. "The CM should also act strictly against people posting communal remarks on social media and issue an order."

Earlier, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa held a meeting with minority opposition MLAs and MLCs and urged them to pass the message within the community asking those who had attended the Delhi Nizamuddin Markaz event to come and get tested for Covid-19.

Bengaluru, Jan 1: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah on Wednesday slammed the Centre on the issue of fare hike announcement by Indian Railways.

"Increase in Train fares is a New Year gift by Narendra Modi government to common people," Siddaramaiah tweeted.

"This will further dent the developmental prospects as Railways form a backbone of Transportation. Instead, the govt should have gifted us the values of our Constitution by upholding it," he added.

Mandya, Jun 13: Degree colleges will begin classes after the lockdown is lifted and dates for examinations will be announced later, said deputy chief minister CR Ashwath Narayan on Friday.

Speaking at College of Agriculture, Mandya (VC Farm) on Friday, Ashwath Narayan said the lockdown will be completely phased out on June 30 and degree colleges will begin classes after that. “We will speak with all stakeholders to chalk out measures as to how to reopen degree colleges amidst coronavirus scare. All students must continue their studies and be prepared for exams,” he said.

Narayan said the cabinet has approved to upgrade VC Farm as a university and an ordinance will soon be promulgated in this regard. “There is a need to change the present curriculum to meet present day requirements. VC Farm will be made into a world class agriculture university and a vice chancellor will be appointed,” he said.

“Apart from traditional education, we must concentrate on skill-based education as it should create more job opportunities. We are committed to establish more skill-based educational institutes in Mandya district,” Narayan said.

Later Narayan visited Shivaragudda near Maddur and inspected 48 acres of government land which could be used for establishing skill-based education institutions. “This land was earlier used for imparting skill-based education in a collaboration with Denmark. Sir M Visvesvaraya had established skill-based institutions here in 1923 and now they have become defunct. The then prime minister of Denmark had inaugurated this century old institution. We will revive it and this will help local youths,” he said.

‘Ticket promised only to R Shankar’

When asked, Narayan said R Shankar, who quit the Congress-JD(S) coalition and joined BJP will be given a party ticket to contest the legislative council election. “Except Shankar, the high command did not promise council tickets to those who quit congress and JD(S) and joined our party. It is true that there is hectic lobbying in BJP to get tickets,” he said.
