Flood-hit Karnataka needs Rs 40k-cr: BSY; Centre will send a study team: Modi

Newsroom, Aug 17: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital yesterday for the second time in ten days  to request an immediate release of more grants to flood-hit Karnataka, tried to convince the latter that the south Indian state needs a whopping Rs 40,000 crore for rehabilitation work.

During their 45-minute conversation, the PM assured Yediyurappa of sending a central study team to Karnataka to assess the damage caused due to floods. The state government has appealed for assistance at the earliest. There was, however, no push for declaring the floods in Karnataka as a National Disaster despite the Congress pressing for it.

“Karnataka saw 279% more rain between August 3 and 10, the highest in 118 years, leading to loss of life and property,” Yediyurappa is said to have told the PM, adding that the huge quantum of water released into the Krishna river by Maharashtra stood at up to 6 lakh cusec daily.

“Sixty-one deaths have been reported so far and at least 15 are still missing. Around 58,620 houses have been damaged, 4.7 lakh hectares of crops washed away, 18,000 km of roads, 650 bridges, 54,000 electric poles and transformers are severely damaged,” Modi was told.

Even as the opposition has been demanding that Modi visit the flood-affected regions and assess the situation himself, the PM has, as of now, only assured to send a central team to study the losses.

Central assistance is expected to be announced only after the team submits its report. Apart from Union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Suresh Angadi, senior state BJP leaders R Ashoka, Jagadish Shettar and Govind Karjol were part of the meeting. Yediyurappa, who could not meet Union Home Minister and BJP national president Amit Shah the last time he visited New Delhi, is scheduled to meet him on Saturday. Formation of the Karnataka cabinet and portfolios is likely to be discussed.

Mangaluru, Jan 2: The Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has dropped its plan to stage a massive protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens on January 4 at Mangaluru’s Nehru Maidan.

Addressing a press conference here today, committee chief K S Mohammed Masood made this announcement.

“All the 28 organisations that had decided to stage protest under the leadership of the Muslim Central Committee, have unanimously agreed to temporarily cancel the protest plan after the city police refused permission for the event,” he said.

Mr Masood requested the people, especially the youth, not to lose patience. “No one should head to Nehru Maidan on January 4 as Muslim leaders have unanimously decided to cancel the protest,” he urged.

S M Rasheed Haji, Y Abdulla Kunhi, Umar UH, Ibrahim Kodichal, B M Mumtaz Ali, Khasim H K, Mansoor Ahmed Azad and Asif Deals were present in the press meet.

I want to know from them wat was the need for this. Has this helped the ordinary Mangalore Muslims in anyway. I would not have asked abt this if the program was conducted in your house. But here it is done in the name of Muslims. We need to stop being intellectually dishonest

But there are a lot of questions about it on people's mind.

We need to be updated about ur next plan of action.

Are u planning to approach the court for gaining the permission from the police, bcoz otherwise I don't think we will get the permission

 

Secondly, a few days back I wanted to contact Muslim central committee office to confirm if the protest Wil be there. I googled for the no, but the no. did not exist. Does that mean the Muslim central committee does not have an office or telephone no????

This only shows how organised we are.

Requesting Muslim central committee to get their house in order. Get more professional. Also consult people to utilise various platform to responsibly collect funds from so many ordinary bearys who want to donate money, but don't know whom to send it to.

We need an action committee to handle such situations. It must consist a battery of lawyers to fight the cases filed by the police.

If our leaders are old, they need to groom new leaders into the committee.

 

Moreover, it is important to question these so called leaders about their fecilitation program conducted for making kateel wen he won the election. Wat was the purpose of such fecilitation. Becoz I don't think he gives a damn when our community suffered. I question, whether all this is done in our name only to gain your contact and flourish ur business???

Bengaluru, Jun 7: Fatalities due to coronavirus reached 61 in Karnataka with two more deaths, while 239 more tested positive for the viral infection, pushing the tally in the state to 5,452, the health department said on Sunday.

The total COVID-19 cases in the state include 2,132 discharges, 3,257 active cases and 61 deaths. A 61-year-old woman suffering from hypothyroidism and was diagnosed with Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) died on Saturday whereas a 57-year-old man having filariasis and chronic nyeloid leukemia died on Sunday in Bengaluru.

Most of those who contributed for Sunday's new cases were interstate passengers. 183 passengers, most of whom returned from Maharashtra were tested positive for the virus, the health bulletin said.

According to the health department, 39 coronavirus positive cases were reported in Kalaburagi and Yadagiri, 38 in Belagavi, 23 in Bengaluru urban, 17 each in Dakshina Kannada and Davangere, 13 in Udupi, 12 in Shivamogga, nine in Vijayapura, seven in Bidar, six in Ballari, five each in Bengaluru Rural and Hassan, three in Dharwad, two each in Gadag and Uttara Kannada and one each in Mandya and Raichur.

India today reported the highest single-day spike of 9,971 new Covid-19 cases and 287 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases in the country to 2,46,628

.

Bengaluru, May 22: Karnataka government on Thursday said that there will be no inter-district check-posts for health screening in the State.

"There will be no inter-district check-posts for health screening in the State. Any health screening for passengers travelling by public transport -- buses and trains -- will be done at the origin of the journey and all those passengers found asymptomatic will be allowed to travel," reads the statement issued by the Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services.

It further reads: "The agencies running public transport (KSRTC and others, Indian Railways, private bus operators) should ensure health screening of passengers before the start of the journey. There will be no health screening of passengers travelling by private vehicles across districts in Karnataka."
